Posts: 64 Location: Stockbridge, WI | I'm wondering if this reel will work for burning blades. It has a 6.3 : 1 gear ratio. The Trinidad has a 6.2 : 1 gear ratio. Am I correct in thinking that these reels should have similar performance or am I way off base? Edited by motoyama 3/1/2009 3:40 PM

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | The gear ratios are very close, but that doesn't mean the reels will perform in a similar manner. The amount of work required to move the handle is dependant upon the gear ratio, the diameter of the spool and the length of the handle. The C4 doesn't have the massive spool or the long power handle that the Trinidad has. While you could add a power handle to a C4, it doesn't make it reel in more line per crank. It will only make it easier to reel since you have more leverage. More leverage is a good thing to a certain point. If you added a one foot long power handle, it would be very easy to pull even the hardest pulling baits. This would however put great stress on the gear and pinion of the reel, which weren't designed for this kind of stress. You would certainly experience mechanical failure sooner than later. On the other hand, the Trinidad has a large power handle and large spool, being turned by a gear ratio of 6.2:1. This reel is built much heavier than the C4, thus it can handle the torque generated. The 7000 has a lower gear ratio, but a large spool, so it's easy to retrieve, but won't generate the speed that a higher geared reel like the Trinidad will. To simplify, the C4 is good for easy pulling baits that don't require lots of torque, but require higher speed retrieves. The 7000 is good for hard pulling baits that require lots of torque, but not a lot of speed. The Trinidad is good for hard pulling baits that require lots of torque and lots of speed. If you're using a C4 for hard pulling baits, you're working harder than you have to.

Posts: 64 Location: Stockbridge, WI | Thanks knooter, that is about as good of an explanation as a guy could ask for. I do have a 7000 but as you said, couldn't get the speed out of it. Guess I'm going to have to buy another reel.

Make sure you have a very full spool of line. This does two things, speeds up your retrieve and also it will allow you to move the bait faster from the start.
