Posts: 727 | Which do you guys prefer more. A crank with rattles or one without, and when would you use one over the other?

Posts: 90 Location: ne53 | I like rattles, but if I had to choose, clear water no rattle, stained water with rattle. In stained water it is easier for the fish to target the lure with a rattle.

Posts: 4266 | the hooks beating against the sides of a crankbait make more than enough noise the way it is. no need for further racket.

Never thought of it that way... But I do like the rhythmic click of a believer pulled slowly on the surface, cant get that with hooks alone.

Posts: 4266 | That's true. THE most under-rated surface lure! A jointed Believer reeled just slow enough to make that...clack-clack-clack

Posts: 480 | Rattles rock! just another way to fine tune a presentation on giving the biters what they want. Sometimes rattles outfish non rattles 10:1 in gin clear water.I've been on the "I'm glad I'm not you side of the boat". Be prepared, have both along.

Posts: 1456 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | I read an article awhile back on this subject. The author was a river fisherman of stained water and his feeling was this: "Fish that live in stained water rely more on their lateral lines to locate and strike food. In fact, the lateral lines of these fish are likely more sensitive than fish in clear water. Therefore, using rattles in stained water is like yelling at a blind man, not needed and likely counter-productive." Now, that made alot of sense to me. That said, I do fish the river quite a bit and must say that one of my most productive lures has been a ten inch Jake WITH rattles. Who knows? Like so much with musky fishing, nobody knows.

Posts: 1289 Location: WI | I caught my PB on a 10" jtd Believer with rattles in a dark stained river. They both work, but I'm a little partial to the rattling baits.

In stained water Rattles of different sizes and sounds do very well, most of the time. There are exceptions and there will be days when lures with out Rattles will out perform them. I was taught: Clear days clean water/ straight lures w/No rattles and (natural colors)...But on overcast days w/Stained water jointed baits w/ rattles and (brighter colors).... I am not sure if this will work for you, but it does for me. I'm sure their are a lot of variables, you just have to try them out for yourself and see what works for you. Mjr
