Posts: 115 Location: Birch Run | New to musky fishing as of last year, caught my first one this past october on a db cowgirl. I have several rods and reels mostly with 7000's. I want to buy another rod and reel, something longer. I have been looking at 8'6 okuma evx, I hear alot of good things on here about those rods for the price. I seen on a couple musky shows guys using larger reels, I think I seen a show with a guy using a trinidad? Are those reels necessary? I have burned the smaller inlines with the 7000's but burning the doubles must be a trigger also. Which reel would be good for that, I guess the saltist would be in my price range, which size, and what gear ratio? thanks

Posts: 115 Location: Birch Run | How fatiguing is that? Is that reel good for any other types of lures? I thought the lower gear saltist might be good for burning with the large amount of line picked up?

Posts: 203 Location: Minnesota | Higher the gear, more line will be picked up per handle turn, thus more speed... Shimano Trinidad and Diawa Saltist are the only known reels able to really BURN DB10s... You can use other reels such as 7000iC3 but it wont last too long... Have had them blow out on me just cuz I really cranked that handle... Am definitely going the Shimano path when the season starts for me in 2009...

Posts: 415 Location: madison wisconsin | Shaley, is the curado a high gear ratio? How long have you been using dbl 10's with it? I "heard" that they don't last too long. I kind of like the low profile idea.

Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | Ran it all last season. its a 6:3:1 I think May go to the 5:1 Toro if I can get a deal on one just to give Abu another look. Hopefully my partners won't disown me if I buy one

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | Did you put a power handle on that Curado 300? I've thrown double tens with mine and it's a chore. Certainly wouldn't be able to burn them with it. I too am going to try the Revo Toro this year, just to give my wrists and forearms a break from the bigger reels. I overdid it last year and ended up with some stubborn tendonitis.

Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | Nope no power handle. I'm not a burner just a nice steady retrieve.

Posts: 115 Location: Birch Run | I understand the higher the gear ratio the more line picked up per revolution, but I thought with large spool the higher ratio wouldn't be necessary. 100lb braid and a large spool reel like the saltist with the lower gear I thought would be suitable for burning, without some much fatigue but I guess I was wrong. Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | I started last season with a Okuma Induron for DCG's with the power handle on it I found it made my wrist hurt in a short time due to having to crank faster with the lower gearing. Ended up using the Curado and love it. Honestly the reel I own that you don't feel them on at all is an old Corsair ( I love that reel). I think it all boils down to what you think works best for you not what everyone tells you is right.

Posts: 406 Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | I have both a Saltist and a Toro 60 and am excited to get out and try the Toro. I used the saltist a little last year and seems to work pretty well, although it is a little bigger than the reels that I am used to palming (still ok, just different). If the toro performs as I have been told they will, I will be replacing several of my round reels as that Toro is super comfortable on the rod.

Posts: 115 Location: Birch Run | I am assuming the HS toro 60, not the standard retreive? I think the standard toro60 would be a nice reel for slower retreives. The winch series is a little cheaper what to do guys think on slower retreived baits on that reel also?

Yes, but isn't that why Abu includes a Power handle?

Posts: 1726 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | BALDY - 2/23/2009 12:45 PM The Abu power handle does not make it any easier to turn the handle That is incorrect as the power handle is longer than the standard handle. This creates a higher torque on the gearing which in turn takes less force to turn the handle on hard pulling lures. Torque = length x force.

Thanks for the physics lesson, but I understand torque just fine. No Abu Power handle I have ever seen has had a lever arm longer than the standard paddle handle.

Posts: 1726 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | The power handle is 8.5 mm longer than the paddle handle from paddle to paddle or paddle to balance weight. Edited by RyanJoz 2/24/2009 10:02 AM

Posts: 227 Location: New Brighton, MN | Am I safe with a Calcutta 400b for double 10's? or should I pick up an Okuma Induron? Will either of these reels break down on me from running double 10's at regular speed? I picked up the Calcutta last year for DCG's, and am getting nervous with all the chatter on reel's exploding from abuse. need I worry? will an Induron handle it better or get me quicker line retreval ?

Posts: 2378 | The Calcutta SHOULD be more robust than the Induron, but you never know. The Induron has a slightly lower gear ratio so it will be a little easier on you cranking them all day. My guess is you will be just fine with the Calcutta.

Posts: 227 Location: New Brighton, MN | Thanks. I may buy the Induron as a secondary reel if reviews on them stay positive. I've heard good things so far. Alot of people seem to be having good results with the Induron pulling big blades.

I am comparing the handles from a 6500 C3 to an Abu Power Handle. This is the new handle with the soft rubber grip being compared to the stock handle of a 6500 C3.
