Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> St.Croix rod eyes

Is it just me or do other people have problems with the eyelets on their St.Croix rod? I've had to replace 6 in the last year! These are all 0-2yr old rods!!!!!! I've had 5 St.Croix, and I'm sad to say that I'm done with them. Nothing worse then spending top dollar on something and having to pump more money into it because of defective (cheap) components. Sorry I just needed to vent since I just brought my Avid back for new eyes for the 2nd time.

Treats,
Have you discussed the situation with our service dept.? Hopefully, something is going on that we can rectify quickly for you.

M.T....what seems to be the major problem with the guides? Are the inner rings chipping?

Funny you should say that, last night I took out my new st-croix I got from an auction this winter and proceeded to install a reel on it. Well after I tied the leader on for some reason I decided to pull on it and see the action of the rod, well the line cut at the top eyelet and after inpection is was chipped. [:(]

What a bummer, now I have no idea where and how long it is going to take to fix it. I was counting on it to start the season with as my loomis order came in today so I am now short one rod. [:((]

Rob you have a solution? maybe you can mail me the ceramic peace and I can insert and glue it myself?

Thanks

Richard...tip tops are usually easy to replace if St. Croix is putting them on with ferrule cement...are you Rob? If they are you can just heat them up with a cigarette lighter and they will come off. Don't heat too much though, or you can damage the thin material at the end of the rod...especially if it's graphite. If I were you I would put a silicon carbide tiptop on...they are much tougher than the aluminum oxide or hardloy...also more expensive. The tip takes the most abuse.

Richard,
Call the factory and hit the extension for the service center. They can give you all the details on what we can do for you.

I have St. Croix rods that are 7 years + old and have only had to replace two guides which were stepped on by clumsy
feet of kids. St. Croix has turned their repares in less than 7 days both times![:praise:]

Rob,

I didn't bother calling St.Croix because the best they could possibly do (short of sending new rods) is take a week and require me to ship the rod back. For the $10 and a couple days it takes Thornes to fix them it isn't worth my time. What my problem is that I've had over 1/2 my rods require this and I've lost well over $50 in tackle (frayed line, lost lures and leaders) due to these. It's also a pain to be short a rod, especially when I'm taking customers out for a day of fishing. I've had them chip and even had the entire center fall out of a couple. This is unacceptable in my oppinion for a $200 rod! I just told Thornes to replace ALL the factory eyes on my Avid because I don't want to have to go in again. I'm going to start selling my premiers (cheap) once I start having problems with them later this year (yes I'm that confident I'll have problems).

I've owned over 50 rods in my life and have NEVER had to replace one eye on anyother make. I don't know if you had some quality problems with your components but something is wrong. Go into Thornes right now and you'll see over 25 rods in there for repair (eyes) and they're all St.Croix.

I hate it to go off like this, but when I am VERY disatisfied! If it was only one of them it'd be one thing (there's always a lemon in the bunch) but when I see it consistanly I know that the problem goes much deeper.

Rob, if you want to talk to your service dept and see what they can do, please do and let me know. As of now I'm a disatisfied customer and nothing much short of getting me replacements (or loaners until I get mine back) probably would be a waste of time.

Muskie Treats,
It sounds like you may have gotten a bad batch. I have three premieres, and I have never had a problem with one. St. Croix stands behind their product. I'm sure they will do everything in their power to help you out.

I have had several brands of rods with problems with the guides. Fron Fenwicks to G. Loomis. I have yet to have a problem with my St. Croixs. Just a matter of luck I think. Most of the guides used on these rods are made by the same company so blaming the rod manufacturer is of no help. It is possible to get a bad batch of anything including rod guides. I have found the greatest problem to be when the rods are in the rod box. When you pull one out it damages itself or another rod by banging together. I finally realized that I was doing most of the damage myself. I solved this problem by purchasing some nylon rod sleeves from Bass Pro. I have not chipped or broken a guide or guide insert since purchasing them 2 years ago. Very cheap insurance for those valuable rods. These rod sleeves are like American Express...............I don't leave home without them. They also keep things from getting tangled so bad. This helps to keep me less frustrated and I don't just pull those rods out no matter what damage is done anymore. Bass Pro brand are about $4.00 each. I have seen them cheaper and more exp. but that should be about the cost. Try 'em you'll like 'em.

M1, thanks for the tip. I think I will get some rod sleeves if for nothing else then just to better organize my boat. It doesn't matter how big a boat you have, it's always messy when you fishing (or is that just me?).

I've heard rumors (don't quote me) that for a couple year span St.Croix used a cheaper eye and had so many problems that they switched back to Fugi. I can't confirm this since I got it from the hearsay, but that would explain alot. All my rods are from a couple year span 99-01 and this may explain it.

We did switch to Fuji SIC guides on the Avid Musky Rods back in '01.

I too have had trouble with the top guide on my 7'6" rod. I called St. Croix and they not only were very helpful, but are also sending the new tip, glue, and instructions on replacing it. I have to say that I have heard St. Croix had great service, but even I was suprised at how good. I just wanted to say that I have owned other rods, but now its St. Croix or nothing.

Hey Treats...

As you know I have all St. Croix rods and also had a problem last year with a few guides. I figured out what I was doing wrong and could it be that you are doing the same as me and when you take that "Air Craft Carrier" out that you call a boat that perhaps you hit the waves a bit hard and your rods might bounce a little? Drop them? Have others in your boat with big feet? Go back to the old rods that you used...of course they won't break if they are metal...they also will make you lose 50% of the sensitivity that you enjoy. Of course Thorne LOVES when you bring your rod in. "Hey Billy Bob here comes that four eyed fool with his St. Croix again"
Yes they are somewhat easier to get it done. Give St. Croix a chance before you write them off.

Oh yeah one more thing....... Change your name to Jackplate.

Stop blaming it on the boat. Now I am aware of the Shady One's record in tourneys. I also know he has a wee bit of a temper, unlike me. Only time I've seen a rod tip crack is from missing a fish, and wacking it in disgust!! Do like I do. Miss a fish, and throw the rod overboard!! That way, no busted guides![:praise:]

Still room left for the Bone outing! Come on, let's sign up you guys!

Tight lines,

Shady, You talking to GregM. I honestly didn't see that wake when we're were going WOT [:0] . I don't step on them and when I'm running they aren't in the rodrack bouncing around with eachother. I may go back someday, but I'm going to see what else is out there first.

Treats, if you are determined to change, give the Falcons a try. Mine are great and seem to be holing up well. I am buying 2 more within the week. The FC-9-166 and the FC-9-1610. I still have not gotten used to the 7' jerk bait rods. They are just a little too long for me. I think Thornes has a good selection. Falcon mentions them on their web site.

Mr. Jackplate, it sounds like you need to be more carefull with your rods. Any rod is not industructible. My Dad has the same problems as you, but he is rough on the equipment. I haven't had any problems with St. Croix rods and fish way more then he does. I think you've seen to many Ugly Stick commercials.[]

Hook, I'm switching to Thornes on all new rods. I bought one @ the expo and love it!!!! I bought the Avid before I knew how good the Thorne bro's rods are.

Jo, I'm not hard on my rods at all. I've never had any problems except with my St.Croixs. One note on that, it seems to be the same 3 rods over and over so I wonder if they had a bad shipment come in. It would explain a whole lot.
