I've heard some guys use a boga grip to use when unhooking deep hooked fish. Any one do this? Work well? Suggested Brands?

Boga grips can puncture a hole in the muskie's mouth so I would stay away from that method. If necessary use a jaw spreaders, but they are kind of an intrusive pointy/sharp tool too. I use a jaw spreaders when necessary and a Grab-It-Tool always. It is 20" long and can reach way down in there. very safe. This tool is the same to release tools as DCGs are to bucktails. Give it a try.

someone asked me if i had seen a holding tool thats plastic with a piece that slides in from the gill and has a handle grip on the outside. I swear I saw one somewhere but i don't remember where. Anyone know what I am talking about?...imo it seemed to be an ok concept. The end that goes in seemed a little sharp like it might poke a hole in a gill or the mouth but maybe with a rubber cap it could be safe?

it sounds like yo.u're talking about the hook pick, ideal tool for deeply hooked fish.

The guide I've heard that uses one also uses the hook pick. I guess he opens the mouth on deep hooked fish with a boga and gets the hooks quick with the hook pick.

no its not the hook pick its not used at all or unhooking its just for holding the fish without putting your hand into the gill its sorta shaped like in iron...kinda...

Great video. We need more stuff like that. Yeah, we all know what CPR means, but this shows how to do CPR correctly. Remember, once you use bolt cutters on a hook make sure to remove the hook point(s) that are still left in the muskies mouth. It's not as simple as just cutting the hook and your done. Infection or worse could occur if this step is skipped. Also, I'm telling you, check out the Grab-It-Hook Remover/Tool. It is THE most useful release tool you'll ever use. I finally found out who makes the Grabb-It-Hook Remover. Bob Patterson, at bp products makes this tool. Check it out at muskie.com

I use a boga grip (made by Eastaboga company) to hold smaller fish that I don't want to net; it's the perfect tool for hanging onto thrashing, hammerhandle pike. I also use it when I'm shore fishing and have no net. The biggest fish I've landed with it were low-40". It's a good tool for holding the fish's head still, under the water, while you get the hooks out.
Usually the boga grip does not put a hole in the fish's mouth; sometimes it does. I don't think the hole is any worse than the ones from my hooks!
