| I know a lot of you like to take your reels apart and make them bulletproof. Is there anything any of you do to your Calcutta 400B's that makes them "better?"
PIKEMASTER... I know you like to pimp out your TE's. Any advice?

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Lubriplate marine grease. It clings to the gears more than any grease I have seen and is one of the few greases that is allowed by the FAA (my father is an aircraft mechanic). It does turn from white to a gold color when it comes in contact with oxygen, but it does not separate or gum up like many other greases. Brandyn.....next time you are down here I can get you a 14 oz tube for 2 bucks. I use WD-40 and an old toothbrush to get rid of all the old grease on the brake plate and re-grease it all the time. Grease is a lubricant and should not gum up in a short period of time like some of the brands of reel grease I have used (I wish not to name brands). I grease all moving parts lightly to prevent them from hanging up and re-grease the gears monthly if the reels are fished hard. It takes only 5 minutes per reel to re-grease the gears and I have NEVER myself worn out a set of gears. For oil, I use Hot Sauce, but beware, since it is so thin it runs all over and you must reapply the oil very often in small amounts or call up Abu and get the bearing sponges that they use on the new 7000's. These sponges only fit in the friction caps, but will keep that bearing oiled at all times and prevent it from running into the drag washers. If you want to cast a lot further upgrade the bearings to ABEC 7's or 9's (about 12-15 per bearing). Just the other day I had to drive around at the spillway because I got snagged on the opposite shore on the concrete. There is only 1 step that is above water. That is a serious cast!
Good luck,
Ryan |
