Subject: Charging batteries

I have a 24 volt system on my new boat and was wondering if I have to charge the batteries seperately or if I can hook up the charger just like the trolling motor?

Does the plug have 'Marinco' on it? Is it a big, black plug, and does the system have a 'charge' and 'run' position for the switch?

It is probably a home-made 24 volt set-up. There are no switches or anything other than 2 12 volt batteries basically wired together. The charger I have is for 12 volt batteries so I have been disconnecting the wires and charging them seperately so far.

Buy yourself an onboard charger. I cooked three batteries over the last three years. Then I bought a GOOD charger and haven't had a single problem since. Bass Pro has Guest chargers on sale right now (?). The 2611 model was only $89.

Shorty- You can charge each battery without unhooking them, just make sure polarity connections are right on the battery you're charging when connecting the charger Pos -> Pos and Neg -> Neg.

But like liljoe said. I'd also recommend a good onboard dual charger, Then you don't have to worry about connections. Once it's installed, it's simply a matter of plugging in the extension cord.

For more info on batteries & boats- see April-May 2002 Issue of In-Fisherman. Excellent article! Also if you're a Muskies Inc member check the Dec 2001 Issue. There's an article I wrote on same subjects.

The onboard charger is your best bet. The reason I asked if the system was a Marinco is that system allows for the batteries to be charged from the troll motor plug, and both are charged. The system is switched from 24 to 12 internally when one goes to 'charge/run'.

I just looked at the trolling motor plug and it does say Marinco on it. Do I need to buy an onboard charger and then just plug the trolling motor plug into the charger? What charger do you recommend and who carries them? Thanks for the help. What type of batteries are you guys having the best luck with?
