| St Croix has two new rods this year in their Premier lineup; the PM80HF and PM86XHF. Wondering if anybody on this forum a "preview" of these rods during beta testing this summer.
I own a number of Premier rods including the PM76MHF, PM76HF, and PM80MHF. Thinking that one of these new rods would replace my PM76HF with the added advantage of some additional length. The 8'0 would be a no brainer but wouldn't mind the extra length of the 8'6" as long as the action isn't a whole lot stiffer than the 8'0. |

Location: Bartlett IL | The St Croix Premier (SCII) rods that you are asking about are very similar to the comparable Legend (SCIV) rods.
The new Premier Heavy is nearly identical to the Legend ‘Sling Blade’ except for the length. I just compared the two blanks side by side and it is difficult to tell them apart. If length is an issue, a custom builder could extend it to 8’6” or even 9’. I have yet to build on the SCII blank but I have built seven on the SCIV Sling Blade blank. All the comments I have received is that it is a great all round heavy rod and is excellent for double 10’s.
The Premier Extra Heavy seems to have a little softer tip and slower action than the Legend ‘Big Dawg’. Both are designed to throw the big plastic baits and rated to 10 oz. This means they are stiffer than the heavy but not to the point of being too stiff for when it comes to fighting a fish. I have heard that some people think the Big Dawg rod is too stiff for throwing double 10’s but others love it.
Bottom line is that both the Premiers are excellent blanks and either one will fit well in your arsenal. I guess the decision would be based on the heaviest lures you will be using. The SCII blanks come it at a lower price point but do compare well to the higher priced SCIV’s.

I have only used and own the Premier rods so don't have any reference on the Legend siilarities.
I currently own the a PM76HF and am looking at the PM86XHF to more or less replace this one with the advantage of some extra length. I currently use the PM76HF to throw a lot of my heavy stuff like the big Suzy Suckers and large bucktails. I also use it to rip big twitch lures. My hope is that the PM86XHF will give me a full 12" length advantage without me finding it to be too stiff for the twitch lures and big bucktails. The PM80HF may have an action more similar to what I want but with only a 6" length gain.
It is sometimes hard to anticipate how a rod will feel jus by it's action rating. I own two additional Premier rods MHF action in 7'6 and 8'0 lengths and find that they are completely different rods with the longer rod having much stiffer backbone.

Location: Indiana | I played around with the PM86XHF at the Chicago by hanging some 11" curly sues and mag dawg's on it. It seemed fine for the big plastic's without being to stiff. I haven't thrown anything with one. But I did order one from Professional Edge. |
