Well, since winter is already here and I cannot muskie fish I would like to start making some lures, specifically propeller topwater like rumblers, topraiders, pacemakers, etc etc. my question how do make these?? I am aiming to make a smaller version of the rumbler or topraider if possible. In the near future I plan on trying to make bigger ones as well... any information helps!

Thanks a bunch... musky12

I'm glad you asked this question I was also wondering this. One thing I have not been able to find is the hollow tube that is used on the tail to make if spin free. Does anyone know where to purchase this?

You should do a search function and look for top water baits....there is some info there...I do make many top waters...I will tell you where to get the materials. I use brass tubing and you can get it here....http://www.smallparts.com/?gclid=CPni7dvGypcCFQxKGgod31GfSw

You can get the tally whacker tails here...http://www.upnorthoutdoors.com/stamina/plugs_hardware/tallywacker_tail.html

or here...http://www.mooreslures.com/

Guest - use a rivet inserted into the hole in the wood.

I buy my blades and props from Dick @ Moore's Lures. For tubing I use brass or aluminum tubing as well, but for added sound, I actually use square tubing rather than just round. I will use round on the "body" section, but on the prop section, I will use square. You can find this at any hardware store to get you started. As far as the body goes, I have a lathe and turn my own bodies, or cut them out of wood and use a belt sander/hand sand to shape. You can buy unfinished wood bodies from places like Moore's too, if you want to jump to that step.
It's a lot of fun once you get started and when you catch a fish on a lure you made, you'll be even more addicted!!

I turn my bodies on a lathe and sand down my noses with a belt sander. As for the tail I use copper wire connectors pressed into the tail and cut and epoxy half of a large buzz blade into the wood.

For bodies I think Stamina still has some of the longer topwater walk the dog style lures. The wood was not very dense. You might be able to drill through those and then cut them into sections to affix your single or double props to. Heavy wood will kill your spinning action on the props so you should try to find lighter weight wood. Also, for the single props try to keep those as light as you can but of course thick enough to keep them strong. Its all a balance on topwaters. I have a big box of failed attempts to make some. Good luck! Can't wait to see what you make over the winter!

When making prop topwaters like ones pictures above, is there only one wire going through the whole body? If so were can I get wire thick enough to make these lures? or could I just use really heavy single strand leader wire for it?(If I can use single strand wire what size do you guys prefer)

As for the tubes for the body, I use the rivets also unless it is globe style bait. For a globe, I use square brass tubing from the hardware store to insert in the rotating head to give it more noise. For wire, I have used everything from .051 wire made for building bucktails to longer bicycle spokes. The spokes are like .076 diameter, stainless steel and fun to bend with the round nose pliers. Bought the spokes (probably 400 of em) off Ebay for like $8.00 which included shipping.
