I'm ready to pull the trigger on this rig but not sure what motor to hang on back. Looking at the F150, 150 E-Tec, Suzuki 175 or Pro sx175. Looking for the best of both worlds...fuel economy and performance. Thoughts?

175 Pro XS. Best economy, and performance. Plus they look the best, too.

I own a Ranger 1850 Reatta and have the 150 Yammie on it. I couldn't be happier with the performance and fuel efficiency of the motor.

I'm running a Suzy 140 on my 171 HYDRA-SPORT , Great Motor but if I had to replace it I'd get a E-Tec 150 for it. The 175 Suzuki sounds like a winner for your boat allso. With all new motors these day's get one with a 6 year warranty.

I am happy with the performance of the 150 Optimax on my 1860 Angler...before I would choose the 175 Pro XS, I guess I would need to see a performance bulletin and then weigh the xtra Cost $$$. My 150 with a 3 blade tempest plus turns 4400 rpms and 48 mph, that will vary by load etc...I have seen as low as 46 mph and as high as 50 mph at WOT. There might be a better prop but I haven't felt the need to play with it... So how much more $$$ will the 175 Pro XS and what type of performance gains could one expect?

Performance on a Tuffy X190:

175 Pro XS 62 MPH Average, Tempest 3 blade
150 OptiMax 50 MPH Average, Tempest 3 blade

Best conditions, full load, the 150 will run her 53 to 54, and the 175 XS 62 to 64.

The 175 Pro XS pricing is about 4K more than a 150 Opti or so ball park, so it's a top end, high performance decision for me. I ordered a 175 Pro XS XL.

The 175 Suzi EFI 4 stroke is about the same price as the 175 Pro XS. The 150 Suzi is about 3K higher than the 150 Opti.

Lots of choices.

Wow! 10 mph faster on that set-up is impressive.
But $4000 bucks is a 1000 gallons of gasoline today or at 3 mpg about 3000 miles traveled...which is also impressive.

So now it would depend on how far I was traveling on average if I really needed the extra speed.

But, If someone could get an 1860 angler to do upper 50's with a 175 Pro XS, it would be a consideration, but I would have to experience it myself, because I just can't see that hull doing more than low 50's, but what do I know....
If you get it with a 175 Pro XS, please post your results as I haven't seen anyone do that yet...
Just a consideration, If you get the 175 Pro XS, get the red hull, black/white stripes color option on a tandem trailer....that would be a sharp rig! LOL!

i've got a 175 suzuki on a Ranger 690 (18'9" x 90") which I would guess is about the same weight as the 1860 angler...I do 53 with 2 guys, gear and 1/2 tank...never had it above 54.5 yet...
it cruises very nicely and sips fuel at 30-32...I would weigh the costs and def. look at warranty..i got a 6 yr with mine...as i will have the boat at least 5 yrs...great motor..I would recommend getting a 175 for your boat over a 150 if you can spare the extra $$$

Seems to me like maxing it out would be the best idea, regardless of your brand choice. Higher horsepower results in a more efficient motor at cruising speeds, gives you a higher top-end speed when you need or want it, and will help your resale when the time comes.

I guess if you want a very quiet motor, I'd go with a 175 4-stroke. If you want performance, it's the Opti XS. If there's a very significant price difference between the two, I suppose I'd go with the cheaper one since performance will be good enough (for the girls I go out with, anyway).

I'd go with the Suzy. You have to remember with the opti's or any 2 stroke is you're still going to have to by 2 stroke oil for them. Right now you're looking at the $30+/gal. You're going to spend money doing an oil change on your 4 stroke, but I think you'll be money ahead with the 4. Plus you can troll with the main motor without worrying about fowling plugs.

Although if you like going fast (like me) the XS is the winner hands down.

for what it's worth, I have an 1860 Angler with a Verado 150 and 9.9 ProKicker. I've got the tempest plus 3 blade 21 pitch. During break-in before I had all my gear in it and with about 10 gallons of gas, it hit 49 and some change on the GPS (SmartCraft gauge reads about 15 gallons per hour). With my gear, 3/8 tank of gas, and three people, I get 46 on the GPS at WOT (SmartCraft gauge reads about 14 gallons per hour). The Verado fits my needs; quiet, quick to plane, and no clunking shifting into forward or grinding into reverse). This is the second rig I've owned. I absolutely love it.

I compared charts from the manufacturers about fuel economy and all the other 'benchmarks.' In the end, the dealer closest to me is strictly Mercury now, and with the great service I received from this dealer, motor brand wasn't the issue; Opti versus Verado was. I wanted my wife to go boating when I'm not fishing so I opted for what is supposed to be the quieter one.

I have 2008 1860 Angler with a 175 Pro XS and the fastest I've had the boat is 55 mph via GPS with 2 guys in the boat, most days it runs about 52. I also have a jack plate,walk through windshield and it's packed with as much gear as it can hold. I went with the Pro XS and the jack plate because I figured it would be the only boat my wife would ever let me by new, so I ordered it the way I wanted it.
