I am sure this question has a lot to do with winter depression, but I have heard of a few places where "fish won't eat topwater baits." Are there really places where the fish won't eat topwater, or is it more of they can't eat it if they ain't throwin it? I know one lake that is so busy with boats that it would make sense that topwater wouldn't work (kind of lost in the shuffle), but I have heard it about lakes in the North and South as well. Lakes that don't see a lot of boat traffic. Just kind of thinking out loud........

Posts: 3507 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, I have found the best topwater bite is actually on those lakes that are extremely busy with boats...but the catch is going after the fish when the boats are not there in force. Lots of times, this is after dark or very early morning. Get out there when the crowds are not, and you may find yourself having a wonderful time. On those lakes where people have figured out a night bite occurs, they may not produce as well, but should still have some ability to at least attract fish. I do think there are lakes that produce better for topwater...and most of those lakes are the busier ones during th eday. Steve

Location: Contrarian Island | my guess is there is a topwater bite on every lake that has muskies at certain times. Now I have fished lakes where they barely look at double tens...yup, crazy as that sounds there is one lake I fish we have tossed them a lot, one fish in net, one follow..and these are suppose to be magic right? ; ) this particular lake also see's very little boat traffic, but has a killer topwater bite, on the other end the madison lakes see tons of boat traffic and have a great topwater bite...so imo, you just haven't found the what/where/when if you aren't getting bites...muskies are dumb.. Not saying there isn't a better topwater bite on some lakes than others, certain times of the year, etc. But a lake where they just won't eat a topwater bait? Maybe a lake that doesn't have muskies. On some lakes, this might include fish not eating topwaters, or particular baits or colors of baits working well. However, I would bet money that a fish could be caught on topwater on any lake if it were tossed enough. BG

Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I doubt there is a lake where you couldn't eventually catch a musky on top water. But I've seen times when topwaters were so useless that I sure would have bet there was no muskies in the lake. This was the same lake we killed them on topwater only a few years before that at the same time of year. So basically, if you are in one of those periods, why would you try to feed them something they don't want? If I had to venture a guess, there are probably some waters where almost all the muskies are deep at certain times of the year and they have all the food they need deep, so why would they hit a topwater? Probably the easy to get food dictates more than anything else where the muskies will be and what they are vulnerable to as far as lures/presentations. I too have seen where some lakes are consistantly good topwater lakes when others nearby just plain aren't as good. So if I was absolutely going to fish topwater I'd sure stay clear of those lakes that have a tendency for nonproduction on them.

Posts: 431 | Come on Deceiver don't let the boat traffic get you depressed! As far as the statement that certian lakes not having a certian bite, I think all lakes have their idiosyncracies(sp?) where certian baits prevail. I also believe that fish will hit all baits when the conditions are right. Chris
