I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything about muskies in Lake Winnebago (WI). I have lived a stones throw away from the lake all my life (20 years) and have never heard of anyone catching a musky here, although I have heard from multiple sources that they are in there. I have also heard that the WDNR stocks musky in the lake. If anyone has any information about Lake Winnebago muskies I would be very interested in reading about it.

I think there was an article in one of the Musky Hunter magazines this summer on Lake Winnebago. I could try to look back and see what issue it was in. They talked like it could be a popular muskie lake a few years down the road. I've never fished it but it sounds like there are guys out there learning it.

Bobtodd is right about Musky Hunter magazine. Contact them for back issue for more information!

Low number of muskies but probably more muskies than 10 years ago! Over 50 inch is out there! You need your time and search for it! Do your homework and study on map and get ready when the musky season open....good luck and let us know!

Not true.

I caught a 42 last spring on a jig and crawler near one of the cane beds. It was on purpose, too. I saw the fish swirl, dropped my walleye rig, and put a full crawler on a 3/8 oz jig. Pitched out in front of the fish, and it ate it! A few minutes later, I released a nicely marked 42 incher! Was nice to see that fish.

Several years ago, I took my uncle out for a nostalgia outing on Big Butte. We raised a mid 30 incher off a rock pile in Butte while casting. I learned a bit that day from a guy who had caught many muskies with my Dad, back in the day.

Hey Guys, I live on the east side of Lake Winnebago. From what I have heard they (DNR have been stocking some muskies in Winnebago on the north end of the lake. I don't know who to contact to get the for sure info but I'm sure someone from the DNR could enlighten all of us. If anyone has any info please post it. Thanks Ken Schmitz

For stocking info go to the DNR's website and check out the stocking database. I checked it out briefly and it shows some stocking in the fox, which I assume is the upper end of winnebago. Most of the stcoking looks to be going on in poygan and butte de mort.

There has not been any stocking of Muskies directly in Winnebago yet. They will have to be the Great Lakes Spotted Strain. Back when the GLS stocking was occuring (before VHS) there was not enough fish available to stock Winnebago. The Green Bay biologists actually didn't want to give up any of the fish but there were some put in Butte des Mort, Poygan and up the river on Partridge Lake for about 4 years. The number of fish was low in comparison to the acreage but fish up to 48" were caught last year. Some larger fish are present but they are Wisconsin strain fish and most likely naturally occuring or remnants from stocking many many years ago. Back in the 50's a 50#+ musky was caught on Winnebago, it's in the books. Winnebago could very well be the next Mille Lacs, but it will need a huge quantity of stocking. It is packed full of food for them and has the potential that Green Bay has for big fish. We just need the DNR to figure out how to clean VHS eggs so they can start raising fish again. Wild Rose Hatchery is being renovated and will be able to raise the quantity of fish we need this year. If we have to wait for the new broad stock lakes to get eggs, the stocking of Green Bay and Winnebago system lakes will not start happening for about 10 years. I feel that would be a terrible thing for the great musky fishery we have in Green Bay. This is just another reason why the 54" size limit needs to happen!

If you do fish the Winnebago System, please remember the size limit is 50". Go prepared and handle them well.
