Subject: Sucker Fishing????

Early this spring, before opener, I was given directions to a 15-20 acre pond that has some real nice fish in it. About a week before reg. opener (here in MN), I was at the pond fishing for crappies, and found a ton of 12+ inch suckers congrigated along the shore line. I know some of you trap or catch your own suckers, and I was wondering how? I've been back there recently and haven't seen any more. How should I go about catching these fish, tackle, locations, baits, etc? All suckers caught would go on QS rigs, not single hooks.

Thanks,
MJB

You sure have a lot of time available if you're going fishing for the bait that you'll use to go fishing![;)]

I think there are ways to "trap" the suckers, though I don't know the techniques used. Fishing for individuals would be very time consuming. Our local baitshops special order big suckers for customers - they just need 2-3 days advance notice and $3 per sucker. A great way to go if you're busy.

Just a guess, but I think you could build a sucker trap out of a barrel and some chicken wire. Cut the ends off of the barrel (so that all that remains is a cylinder. Make two funnels from the chicken wire (the same outer diameter of the barrel; and have an inner diameter(small end) large enough to let the suckers in, but not too big 3-4" maybe. Attach the funnels to the barrels so that they are pointing in (staple gun might work..). It might be a good idea if you make one end relatively easy to open (for removing the fishies, adding bait, ect) Drill small holes in the barrel, or it will be very difficult to raise it from a depth.

Attach a rope to it, unless you have some scuba gear :). Weigh it down with some rocks, add some bait (lard, a can of spam with holes in it, ... ) then toss her in!

NOTE

I have never tried to capture my own live bait (other than night crawlers). So my little contraption might not work at all; but i think that the design should work.

Good luck and let us know if you proceed with your plan!
