I am debating picking up a new reel and am pretty set on the TE, but was wondering if anyone has used the 300? I know everyone has the 400, but was curious if there were differences besides line capacity that would steer me towards the 400 rather than the 300. I plan to put this reel on a XXX St.Croix as my big plastics reel. Thanks for the help.

The insides of the reel is exactly the same, so I'd think it comes down to what feels best to you. I find the 300 is just too small for me -- feels strange relative to what I'm used to and just feels more solid cranking larger lures. IMO!

Marshall,

I use onlyTE's ... and have the 300, 400, and TE DC series reels.

Using the 300 TE series for throwing big plastics will place undue wear on this reel and the pickup rate will be significantly less (and you'll be reeling your tail off).

The 300TE is a great reel for small spinner baits, smaller crank baits, and small swim baits.

gopackgo suggests that the insides of the reels are exactly the same. I don't see how that is possible, as the 300 series reel seems a lot smaller than the 400 series, but I've never opened it up to check that out (send the reels to Shimano once a year for servicing ... purchase a TE and Shimano will service the reel and get it back to you within 5 days ... and they have always met those standards for me).

Craig

Thanks for the input, but not sure on the pickup rate Craig? According to the Shimano website, they have the same pickup (25 in. I think). Maybe it just seems that it is less due to the size, or maybe the amount of line is different??? Thanks for the info though. I will probably go with the 400 just because it is the same size of all my others, and I have no need to spend 350.00 on something that feels awkward. Thanks again.

Marshall,
If Shimano says the pickup rate is the same, then I'm certain that it is. On second thought I was probably thinking about the 200 size TE series. As I said,; I use that reel for smaller stuff and have it spooled with 50lb test.

Go with the TE 700 from Reed's sports for $329. You cannot go wrong!!! Only downfall which is not a big deal at all is manuallly engageing the clutch.

If you have a 300TE and a 400TE, both filled with 80lb test, the 300TE will hold appox 120 yds and the 400TE will hold appox 160 yds, both reels are the same size, but the 400 TE has about 1 inch wider spool. So if you cast both reels say 50yds the 300TE will have a smaller DIA. spool of line then the 400TE now after the cast, so when you start to reel in the 400TE reel will have a faster line pickup then the 300TE reel for about the first 25 yds or so. Line pickup is by gear ratio and size/dia of the spool. So the 300TE you will have to reel about 2-3 more times around on the handle the first 25 yds. then the 400TE. It don't sound like alot but after 10-12 hours a day it will. The 700TE weights in at 19.90z and has a line pickup of 31" , but if you really want to burn DCG10/13 then get the TRINIDAD 16N 46" OF LINE PICKUP on this bad boy at the same weight as the 700TE.

pikemaster is exactly correct about the difference in spool width and line pickup. a wider spool will keep the line on the spool at a larger diameter. Larger spool diameter means higher line pickup in terms of inches, not gear ratio. Consider a 200 size vs a 400 size just by example. if you cast 40 yards with both reels, the 400 will have nearly double the diameter of remaining line on the reel thus it will have a higher pick up rate in terms of inches per turn of the crank.

I had a 400TE and a 300TE, I got rid of the 300 because it didn't pick up enough line on the end of casts. Had to reel my arse off until some line came back in. It seems like a bit of an oddball size to me considering what 200's and 400's can do.
