caught a 54" Muskie in Lac Seul (Ontario) a couple of weeks ago that was tagged by the Ministry of Natural Resources. I just received the information today about this particular fish. Apparently it was caught by the M.N.R. in 1995 and was tagged and measured at 38.5 inches long, and was 8 years old at that time. It is now 54 inches long and 21 years old. I caught this fish within meters of where it was tagged back in 1995. I found this information to be really interesting and I thought maybe some of you would too. by Dave Wright

Posts: 126 | I have caught what I believe to be the same fish off the same spot a couple times on back to back years. I only say I think they were the same fish due to some unique marks/scars on the fish, but no tags. This kind of supports the territorial theory.

Posts: 717 Location: Grand Rapids, MI | We've had fish from Green Bay show up here in Michigan waters. So in other words, they crossed Lake Michigan. Edited by JimtenHaaf 2/9/2009 5:31 PM

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | You don't keep the tags. You write down the number and call it in to the DNR. If you remove the tag you just wasted a lot of money and potentially valuable information that could be learned from this fish over it's life and not just the time you caught it.

Posts: 61 Location: Sioux Lookout On Canada | Nice fish Dave Wright. Where on Lac Seul? Bearpaw? Farlinger? the Rags? Manitou area? or up north. I am not surprised about the age of the fish. Some people say that they grow slow, but, I always believed that their growth rate is more rapid than say a walleye. I don't know the science but, I have caught smaller spotted muskies that had specific markings that were caught by some friends over the course of a few years. Even though they grew, the markings stayed the same. Their increase insize tells us that they eat more than we think. I know a guy who caught a 52" on a shoreline in Bearpaw, and the next year, it was caught on the opposite shoreline less than 400 yards away. Good subject and thanks for the info. Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | DNR released a fish here a few years ago, it was caught the next day 15 or 18 miles away from where it was released, in the creek that flows out of the lakes. Fish had to get over the spillway, through 4 lakes to get into the creek it was caught out of.

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | Musky Hunter Mag had an article about this topic. I believe they did the study in WI (could be wrong) but it was done where there was a series of lakes connecting. What they found is each fish is unique in where they like to spend their time. Some fish stayed in a small home range while others roamed open water, and some had swam miles to other lakes. This must have been a 'stay at home' fish... I'll see if I can't find what issue that article was in.

Posts: 1290 Location: WI | The strain of the fish might have something to do with it. I think I've hear Lee Tauchen talk about WI strain being more of a homebody fish.
