I just bought some of that 80lb cortland blackspot braided line because I found it for a good price and I was wondering if its any good? is it any different than the other braids like spiderwire or powerpro?

I like spectron better than powerpro and spiderwire both. It is my go to line. I like the blackspot for fishing low light conditions and the green for during the day.

ryan,
do you have documented fish numbers in the net that justify your line color choices for time of day?

Both are the same material, it is just that the white/black is easier to see at night since it is mostly white and the green blends in more during the day, but is still easily visible. I do not document fish numbers based on line color as that is the least of my worries. I fish what I can see and what I am comfortable with. Cortland green and blackspot are both from the same spectron family, just died different colors.

The "blackspot" has a nylon tracer surrounded by spectra fibers. Similar to Tuf Line. The nylon will fray quicker than the spectra, causing the line to become "fuzzy" over time. Just an observation. Steve

I have come to learn after the past year that good price for line isn't always a good thing. Most of the time what you pay for is what you get. I haven't decided 100% what brand of line I will be using next year but I can say for sure that if a 150 yd spool is under $25 I won't be buying it.

I ran cortland line (masterbraid and blackspot) on all my reels last year, and most of the year before. 60+ fish with zero problems. I only end up changing my line when the spool is low from removing the the section my hooks rub now and then.

I dont like the film/coating on powerpro and spiderwire myself.

If you're paying that much for the major brands that are out there, you're paying too much. It should be no problem finding a top quality line for less than that unless prices jump by quite a bit in '09.

I believe that a 150yd spool of cortland blackspot is regularly around 30 bucks, I found it for 20 bucks and thought I would give it a try.

Judging line quality solely on price is absurd because price has little indication on line quality. Some people will say the cheapest line is the best while others will say you must have the most expensive. The topic of line preference has been brought up many times on the boards and the only clear answer is to try out different brands. Test a few out, and find the brand that YOU like best......
