I have a GPS unit that runs on both AA batteries or can be hooked into a cigarette lighter per a cigarette lighter adaptor. However, I don't have a cigarette lighter in my boat. Wondering if anyone has installed these in their boats? Where can I find the right stuff, etc... ? I am assuming that all i need is to hook up a cigarette lighter input to my starter battery. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | One of two ways 1)cut off the male cig plug off the cord from the GPS and hard wire that to your battery 2) Install a female cig plug and hard wire it to your battery I did #2 with mine - check out the pic. I got the cig plug from Gander Mountain (I think) and my brother fabbed a aluminum bracket to mount the plug to. Edited by muskie! nut 11/24/2008 9:03 PM Attachments ---------------- ![]()

I have one running from my cranking battery. just a cheap one you can find at a hardware store or maybe a marine shop. should have the clamps on there to hook into the battery or you can splice in some o-rings to attach. it's pretty simple and works.

Posts: 135 | I have a cig lighter wired in to my bow as well as my console, bought two in a package from an auto-parts store, they're rubberized and somewhat water proof, and I leave the lighter in both.

Posts: 1169 Location: New Hope MN | My cigarette lighter #*^@ near burned my boat up. I had it installed right next to a cooler. Well i had previously sprayed insulation foam around the cooler to keep things cooler longer. I had used the lighter at least six times with no problems... Well eventaully the lighter got too hot and set fire to the foam surrounding it. There was a big puff of rancid smelling smoke that wouldn't quit. thank god it was a windy day and water was spraying all around. Chew on this little story before you install anything.

Posts: 5874 | They are called a power point. If you need a source for 12V power, get one of these, not a cigarette lighter. Marinco makes them, as well as a couple others. The Marinco unit comes with a weater proof cover, too. I think it's about $12 or so. Attachments ---------------- ![]()
