Subject: What is Your Muskie Weakness???

NO I'm not talking about having an affinity to spotted or barred skies.....
Was thinking of this last weekend when I was beating my head against a wall trying to do ONE pattern that I JUST KNEW was the key....4 hours later I tried what I saw someone else doing, and stumbled on a 31"er. Not big, but was still a fish, and A fish is better than no fish. Was thinking "why did I stick to my theory so long before changing???". I know one of my weaknesses (that prevents me from catching more fish) is I stick to the same old patterns too long...others are: I won't throw hair, rarely do I troll, and I never downsize.
What are things you KNOW are weaknesses in your fishing?

I no longer troll very much for any long period of time. It is a proven technique that I have gotten a way from. Used to make 'em bite with speed but I believed then as I do now that high "speed trolling" is very hard on the fish.

Mines gotta be that I never keep a bait on for very long. I'll normally throw a lure for about 10 minutes then switch up because I lose confidence quickly. However, lately I've been doing much better!

Thats a very easy question to anwser as I only have one. [:p]

And that would be jigging, but I have no patience so I believe it will be one forever with me unless every other method stops working for 2 weeks straight. [:0]

Fishing the same bodies of water over and over and not branching out to other lakes. Which is why I'm taking 2 weeks of vacation this fall and taking my first muskie trip to MN.

Mine are not going to the better lakes sooner, not fishing with a bait long enough, not trolling first and not fishing shallow enough when I should be.

I seem to be drawn to fishing structure that I can see. Rock bars, islands, weedbeds, wood and docks. Although, I am working on it and I have gotten to the point where I will fish a boatlength or two out from the beds now.

I know I need to start trolling too.

"twitching"
I have so much confidence in it and love to do it, but often get caught in a rut and do it to long when the fish are chasing after somthing else.

I find that often I fish too quickly. Even when I throttle back to what I consider slow(which isn't too bad) I still find that to be too fast for the conditions at times. This also prevents me from doing well with jigs and plastics. Too tedious and time consuming, when I could be moving along to fresh water. When I force myself into that mode, I don't do badly, though. There is reinforcement there, but the pace just drives me wild.................

Not zooming from "splash to slash"....the old adage that tells one not to leave fish to find fish is a hard one to break, depending on the species. If I know fish are in an area, then I try to stay put...w/ skis I must learn to come back after a follow instead of spooking the fish by spending the day w/ it![:sun:]

I am a sucker for lures. I have more of the same lure in every color than its worth. After I manage to throw each lure only 1 cast and say this lure is "carp" I always go back to the ole #1!

I tend to get in a rut where I the same spots with the same baits for a week after the pattern ended. Do a much better job of locating patterns on new lakes because I do not have a predetermined opinion about any of the areas on the lake. On the old faithfuls I tend to become a mindless zombie going from spot A to spot B to spot C etc.

Hey, Jim..............

try fishing the Fox Chain south of the border on a weekend once and I can guarantee that you'll never cry about any lake in Waukesha county again.[;)]

My weekness is that I cant find a muskie that will rip out 300 yards of line in less then 10 seconds and take you 30 minutes to get in.[;)] But a Salmon can![]

This year...not much time on the water, but my wife and daughter are happy to have daddy home again instead of guiding.

I won't troll. I'd rather blank. I also tend to use the same lure for what some would say is a long time. I don't believe a pattern can be determined in 30 minutes. Maybe not in 30 hours either [;)]

My weakness is that I live in the Cincinnati area, which really doesnt have any quality musky fishing around. Although Brookville and Cowan have a few, its like finding a needle in the Haystack, and Ceasars Creek Lake is still a couple years away from being productive. The closest lake with a sizeable population is Cave and its 2 hrs. Most lakes are 3 or more hours away. I wish I lived in Minnesota!!! The good thing though about my lakes is when everyone is frozen in, Im out catching fish []

Mine is finding work to do instead of hitting the water when I have a couple hours.I live less than 20 minutes from dozens of great Muskie lakes, and find the older I get, the less I like fishing Muskies alone. For some reason, the back seat being occupied is as important as whether the fish are going. I need to get back in the saddle on my own some more!![:0]
