I have a Konica megapixel model, and really like it, but it is definitely NOT weather resistant. Are there any out there that are waterproof yet, and how many monies are they?

Sony has some really small cameras that you can get in 1,2 or 3 megapixels. You can get a plastic enclosure that not only makes it waterproof, but it can be used as an underwater camera. The cameras are from 300-800$ last i checked and the enclosure is $600. I'm pretty sure kodak also makes a water resistant 2 megapixel camera. I would check on that too.

Hi, my brother has a Sony digital video camera. Don't know if it is waterproof or not, but it eliminates the use of a camera all together. All you do is video tape the muskie being caught and released and then you go thru it frame by frame and pick out the best stills. You always end up with the best shots possible. I'm sure you have all experienced the downer of getting back your film and finding out that the photo didn't turn out, or the tail is cut off, or the fish is blurred cause it started to move, or you are drooling [] etc., etc. Also it gives you an exact account of how much time out of the water, time fish was fought, you can observe the success and/or failure of your release methods, etc. etc. They are a fantastic tool to have in the boat.

Cheers,
Chris

I love the idea of a digital image but on occassion I like to print a few of the good ones. Will a digital cameral reproduce a paper image as good as an SLR camera?

My Konica does a very good job, as long as one does not try to blow the image up larger than 8"x10". The quality is 35mm. I have an Epson 700 photo printer, and printed on photo glossy paper, one would swear that it is a 35!

It all depends of the quality of the printer and the paper it is printed on.

Hey Chris, are you just looking at the stills on a monitor or are you trying to print them too?

From what you said, I wasn't sure but usually it's hard to get a decent print off of videotape. It's somewhat sophisticated to do so. I'd like to hear how you do it.

Jon, you're right it is hard to get a photo quality print. Not 100% sure but I believe my brother's Sony is only 640x 480 resolution, which won't do for prints. I believe he told me that there are some very pricey (4 - 6k) digital video cameras out there with greater resolution, but still inferior to digital cameras. The monitor images are not bad. If you want some stills for your computer files, it's also a good idea to use the proper shutter speed to eliminate blurs (boat movement etc). We were surprised after viewing the first fish we got on video. We guessed we had the fish out of the water for about 20 - 25 seconds, it was actually around 50 seconds. Got to be careful not to keep them out of the water too long, especially with the current heat wave.

Cheers,
Chris

OK, thanks Chris. I know that there are a few digital video cams that can also be configured to take "still" pictures. Now that's not taking "stills" but you can might be able to get a good pic that way, it just takes a moment to reconfigure the camera. Still, you need to have some software and experience to jump through the hoops from capture to print.

I've tried to do some prints off digitized video. Video came in on S or DVC and uploaded to a Pinnacle system running Adobe Premiere. Frames were grabbed and exported as a targa file. All prints were of questionable quality. It's hard because of the resolution of the video in general. I believe, regardless of most video cameras, you will never get a good still from video vs. taking a pic via digital or film cameras. Film, at this point in our time, will always be the best. The video resolution is lower than what you need for print. It exports (out of Premiere, at least) at 72 dpi and you should be around 300 dpi for print. There's probably a way to get very good stills but I suspect that takes a little $$ and know how.

Any video guys out there know how to make a print quality still from video?
