Why are muskie swimbaits not near as realistic as bass swimbaits? I would think a more realistic bait would catch more fish in a pressured lake especially big old fish. I figure some of its gotta do with price cause handpainted baits ain't cheap to make but a big fish is worth it. I'm talking the baits made by smaller operations mostly from cali not the storms and other ones.

Realistic? It's a swim bait, they swim nicely, the paint is nice..I'm not sure what you are talking about. Please elaborate.

I'm talking the paint jobs and the details on the bait. Look up mattlures for example and look at his baits. I'm just curious why muskie baits aren't as detailed looking. Bass fisherman fish swimbaits slower than muskie fisherman though for the most part. Maybe details aren't as important.

Get a swim bait from Nate and you will not believe the action or the paint job. I seriously considered putting it in a frame and on the wall it was painted that great! But after doing one test cast there was no way that I could not use this bait.

I found his site. Some of his baits look good.

The baits are out there, they just aren't widely used because of the cost. Making a bait that is large, swims well, painted-well and sturdy is no easy feat. There are lots of talented builders that do some amazing painting.

Because muskies will eat a 2 X 4 and bass won't. Muskies are hunters and killers. "Pretty" is for the fisherman, not the fish. Steve

That brings to mind a Musky Hunter article where a boy's remote control boat was attacked and brought underwater by a big muskie.

Check out Musky Snax and Bikini Baits. Musky Snax has the most realistic swimbaits I have seen and they have a great swimming action.

Steve nailed it... Colors catch customers, not fish (most of the time). I do think color has its place though. Even bass fishing I have caught a lot on the worst looking non-fish like lures you can imagine.

I think the largest reason is because the lakes bass fisherman target in Southern Cal have very clear water. This gives bass a chance to look very carefully at a lure before attacking it. If you want to see realism, check out Huddleston swimbaits, they are second to none. Mattlures has some new crappie and bluegill that are really cool too and of course Nate makes a great lure.

Steve, what Company was that guy from who you interviewed at the tackle show?
All the new swim baits that he had were super-real. They used actual fish for the impressions for the molds, and the paintjobs were ultrarealistic.
If you don't see life-like muskie swim baits, it's because you're not looking in the right spot.

Overall, action is prolly first, but color can be EVERYTHING at times on Lake St. Clair when trolling.

Castaic's swimbaits are hyper realistic. The rock hard platinum bass looks and swims like a real fish. The soft swimbaits are awesome too.... They have some really good baits coming out in the next year that are more musky specific.
