I almost got one on clearance at the end of last season, but I couldn't put together a matching set in my size, so I passed. This is the year. I'm tired of ending fishing trips because I'm too cold to change baits. Time to get the best extreme weather suit available, but I don't want to spend more than $400 for the two pieces. What do you other late fall diehards wear, and what have you heard is the best? Snow is coming soon, and it ain't stopping me. I want to be able to fish all day and stay comfortable. Any ideas?

I liken this stuff to Under Armor, pretty good, but there's alot more out there that's cheaper and better.

$400 for two pieces? ouch.
for staying warm, keep in mind that quality is more important than the brand name written on the label.

imho, buying single pieces that are really good at one thing limits your flexibility and how much you can use it. because of that i've never been a huge fan of the super cold weather outergear. i prefer layering beneath a good weatherproof shell because it can be adjusted to the conditions week-to-week or even within a single day.

here's what i wore last year on closing weekend trolling in 0 degree windchill:
gore tex lined boots, sock liners, wool socks; wool hats and gloves, etc.
heavy polypro pants - light fleece pants - lined athletic pants - heavy fleece pants
light polyro shirt - heavy polypro shirt - heavy fleece shirt - down vest
over that i wore the standard (not lined) Tech-2-O bibs and parka from Gander

you could get fully outfitted with all that stuff (not counting the boots and hats, etc. which you'd need either way) for way less than $400...and have the added benefit of being able to use it at other times of the year by removing a layer or two.

I've been using ice armor for the past 2 ice seasons, awesome stuff. Very dry, durable, padded butt and knee pads are awesome. Plus the personal storage, I think my bibs and top has over 20+ pockets.... Once you get a system down you'll see each pocket has a specific use. I also got mine for 50% off, so my decision was easy to purchase.

I have the Cabelas Insulated Guidewear Bibs and Parka..I wear the bibs when day time temps don't top out over about 55. With temps from about 35 to 55 I can wear just the bibs and some layers on top like polypro, a turtleneck and then windshirt and i'm warm...windy days I put on a windproof shell and I'm set...
the Parka is super warm but a bit bulky for most days...I only wear that when it's really cold/nasty out...but i have been very happy with both...the bibs rock...
Also have a set of the non insulated Gander Pro Staff something or other guidewear too...that is for 55-70 temps....
I'd look at the Cabelas bibs for sure...then maybe you can get by with just the layering and a wind/waterproof shell...

Ohh, the red plaid chromer that Ed Ghein made famous. Surely you could get an iron on from Ranger that would fit it.

Carhartt Extremes bibs. You won't get cold in these. I've slept outside in them many times in sub freezing temps and stayed warm. They also make a matching parka. Great stuff for camping, ice fishing, patterning deer, whatever your desire. Check Farm & Fleet for the best prices.

For my money it's Arctic Armor. Windproof, Waterproof, lightweight and floats up to 750lbs. if you have an accident and are caught without the life jacket. Bibs and Jacket for around $340.00 complete. Find retailers at idigear.com ( great gloves too.
