Posts: 122 Location: Bloomington, IL | Ok, there has got to be a trick to tying flashabou to the brake cable!! I got my self so frustrated last night i had to stop trying or i was going to zing my tieing vice across the room! So how do you guys do it? small bunchs at a time? ONE at a time??? I find that i can't get it to stay put enough to get the thread around, and when i manage to get a little bit on there, i catch some of the flash and it gets wrapped into the thread as well!! ARRRGH! so can anybody give me some tips? I would certainly appreciate it! My wife would too, so I wouldn't be sitting there in the living room cursing the whole time.

Posts: 313 Location: On your favorite spot | if you do use thread, which i do, make a good solid base wrap before applying the bou, make the ends bigger so the bou has a slot to sit in. put a clump of bou on, make a few wraps before you cut it off the main clump so it's secure, then just rotate it around the coil to spread it out.

Posts: 292 Location: SW MI | Marc beat me to it. That's exactly how I tie flashabou! I divide the pack into 3 sections and cut off a section before I tie it on. After I've tied all 3, I push down where I had it pinched and spread it out. Although, the zip tie thing is not a bad idea, and fast too. Good luck!

Posts: 122 Location: Bloomington, IL | hum....so pretty much already what im doing, although the slot is a great idea!!! I guess I just need to practice up...hair seems MUCH easier to work with. I guess the bou is too limp. Thats what SHE said....HI-OH! lol...sorry, couldn't help myself. I'll have to try the zip tie too! Thanks for the tips guys!

Posts: 131 | I tried the zip tie and it worked great until the toothie critters got to it and off came the bou.now i am using 80lb power-pro.wrap[by hand] 5 times loosely then lay down a loop and wrap 5 times over the loop.run the 80lb thru the loop and pull it thru.[the same as finishing a wrap on an eyelet or serving on a bow string]cut the 80 about 1 inch from the body form[or cable].distribute the bou around the body then pull the 80 tight with a pliers and trim the tag end.seal with finger nail polish.it is super tough, easy, fast, durable and fairly affordable.no tooth is gonna harm it either.by the way i'm using 20 inch magnum bou cut in half and then seperated in half so you can get 4 skirts out of one pack.for the really big stuff i'm using 1/2[2 skirts per pack].

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | Alot has been said, and I guess the biggest thing for my tying is that I stopped worrying about the little stands that go here or there. I usually tie mine in in a single clump, as I'm a heavy-handed tier and I've never had a problem with securing a large bunch at one time. So smaller clumps, or one single clump, the thing I learned to do was to ignore the little "flyers" that would wrap around the thread, or whatever. Unless you have half your clump going askew, one or a few strands going astray won't hurt anything, and you won't even notice them in the finished product. I keep my flies neat and looking good, so I'm not saying just let things fall where they may, but a small few strands won't hurt it's looks, and it'll speed up your tying.

Posts: 122 Location: Bloomington, IL | esoxfly - 10/13/2008 10:02 AM .........and it'll speed up your tying. haha! GOOD!!! im at about 20 minutes per skirt. (Though it feels like 3 hours!!!) I suppose, to be fair, this is in front of the TV, so its not like im concentrating SUPER hard. But still...ill be happy when it speeds up. I like the idea of power pro. That could already be part of my problem, i suppose....the thickest stuff i could find locally was 220...and thats pretty dang thin. PP might help things along as well. Thanks again!

Posts: 4266 | I tied a mess of double Indiana's for the Vermillion outing, and it only took me minutes to complete a lure. It's much faster than working with hair, that's for sure. I get two lures out of each package, and like was written before me, I don't worry about fliers, they all get caught up in the finished product and you don't notice what is under the top skirt anyway. I'm not tying on brake cable, I'm using 3/4 ounce keel weighted coils (stops the bou from doing that 'wrap around the hook thing' that I saw on a friends lure) and dressing the coil as was also said, and then I just give it 2 wraps around using D thread, and once I have two wraps on, I can let go and adjust the bou on the coil to spread it out evenly. My vice came with a handy little coiled spring that I can use to hold the long end of the skirt in a bunch so it's out of the way for wrapping the thread. You can use rubber bands like they use for braces to do the same thing. Anything to hold the bunch of bou in a cluster and out of your way while you make more wraps. Finish off with some cement, and then I give it two coats of clear nail polish on the thread and let it dry while I do others. I've used bou before on jigs, bucktails, Lake Michigan flies etc; but never used it for the entire body before. I bought some Magnum Flashabou from a shop here in Milwaukee that is just the ticket for the rage baits of the age. I'll see how they work in a few days. I tested them in the Milwaukee harbor, and with the 3/4 oz. keel weight, and a 3/8 oz. egg sinker and the weight of the bodies that I used, with #6 and #8 Indiana blades I was able to run the lures down 8 or 10 feet with no trouble. Try the little rubber bands to tame the bou. Beaver

Posts: 291 Location: New Jersey | I just take the whole bunch that i want to tie on, i put two zip ties on the flasabou before i cut it (one on either side of where i will tie the thread). Zip that down pretty tight, lay it over the coil. Wrap 5 or so loose wraps of thread, move the flashabou around the coil so its even, finish the thread wrap, cut off the zip ties. I am thinking about going to garbage ties as i am going thru a bunch of zip ties. Works good for me....... Rob
