hello want to get started making and painting some lures to try, would like to make some with resin and some with wood, do not know much about any of it. I will probably make perch patterns and shad patterns, need a good epoxy, and what is the best way to attach hooks and line tying eyes?? Do you use a form for the resin baits? How do you paint the reflective type scale patterns? Any tips would be really appreciated. thanks, and good luck!!

the first advice I can give is to narrow down your style of lure you want to make. You don't won't to overwhelm yourself at the beginning by trying too much to soon. It will take time and won't happen overnight.

as far as resin lures and I think you mean form baits. From what I understand because I don't make them is that you have to spend most of your time coming up with the proper jig form then everthing after that falls into place.

Now if you want to make wood lures you have to see what tools are available to you. if you don't have much you don't won't to go spend tons of money on tools on a hobby you don't know if you really want to do yet.

basic set-up:
Lathe (cutting tools)
drill press
mitre saw
band saw
dremel
sandpaper
sealer
primer
paints
epoxy
hardware and accessories
and most importantly safety equipment. anytime you use paints, primers, epoxy, sand, turn or whatever be sure to protect your lungs and eyes at ALL TIMES! It is a wonderful and fun hobby but if you are careless you can get hurt.
So if you don't have a lathe or any other tools you could always handcarve as well...very relaxing. Or find an old spindle from a chair or table and find a friend or relative with a drill press or other tool you might need to try it out first before you buy anything.

I hope this was a helpful start and not discouraging....good luck!
