Was using my 05 powerdrive 70lb. motor this morning. All of sudden there is quite a bit of smoke coming out of the head where the power wiring attaches. I suspect that the smoke came from the motor area and migrated up the shaft. Anyone ever have this problem. Timing couldn't be worse! ARGH

Chances are the motor is just fine but the electrical switch on top shorted out. I've replaced a few and it's pretty simple to do. I actually just put a order in today at trollingmotorparts.com. mikesreelrepair.com also has many parts.

We had the head smoke on my Motorguide Brute while on Vermilion. We were running at top speed setting. Returning to the dock, we found there were two wires that crossed and were shorting out against each other. Separated them and put on some black tape and it is fine.
Take the top of the head off and look for melt around the wire / connector interface. m
