I was wondering if anyone has tried or tested the new 8'6" St Croix legend tournament in heavy action. If so, what do you think of it?

I just got mine last nite,so far i think its going to be a real nice rod.I opted to go with the split grip rear handle and it feels real nice.I threw the trinidad 14 on it and took it down to the pond for a test run and it felt awsome,it was everything i was looking for in a big blade rod, however this rod feels like it will be very versatile for alot of applications not just blades.
I am going to give it a real good workout this weekend on georgian bay so monday ill hit up the same post with another update.

I just got done using mine last week. I left town with a Heavy and an Extra Heavy. Watch the buy/sell/trade board for the rest of my other rods. These rods were built to handle big lures and big fish.
The first thing that I noticed is the way that both of those rods were designed to load up on the cast. You can launch heavy lures without much effort. Kind of like hitting a really expensive driver, you can just feel the shaft loading up on the downswing. Same holds true for these rods. All you need is a nice fluid action to cast even the heaviest lures in my box.
Backbone for hook-setting is also awesome. You can't blame the rod for not getting the hook stuck. At 8'6", you are moving wood or rubber at a very fast, powerful clip when you rear back with one of these.
The cosmetics are beautiful, and the cork is as soft as my puppy.
I love these rods because they also alow me to cast and work a lure while sitting down with no problem. That is something that I've been doing more of these days, but you young guys can whip the crap out of 'em too.
Great St. Croix quality, as usual.

Well the rod performed great for me.It is everything i have been looking for in a big blade rod.It loads up real nice on the cast and has lots of backbone in the eight.Plenty of hookset power and a sweet curve to her when loaded up on a fish.
I didnt get to test her on any real big fish as the muskies of georgian bay were less than cooperative this past weekend but i did manage several pike up to about 12lbs and a couple of big 4 to 5 pound smallmouth that wanted to eat the cowgirl.
The rod is a great stick as are all the legend series muskie rods.My rod search is finally over, the sling blade is definetly keeper!

I just got out of Thornes and they told me that St.Croix is coming out with a Cowgirl Rod in the blue blank. It's going to have some good backbone with a soft tip. I'm already in line for this one.

I was a little disappointed with the rating on it. It's the same as the old Avid 8' which was too stiff. If it's the same power as that Avid it will make a good bulldawg rod, tho. I was hoping for something along the line of the LT 8' MH with the power turned up just a notch.

Thats the rod were discussing here,it was released about 3 weeks ago, most store dont have it yet but if you make a special request you can get it as i did.
It is called the sling blade and is available in split or full rear grip,i opted for split.
I have only used mine one weekend so far but it performed very nice,i think you guys are going to really like this rod!:)

I have the 7'9" and it has handled everything I have nicely(including cowgirls). I can only imagine how sweet that 8'6" must be. I really need to skip over these posts. Looks like I am going to have to make more room in the Rod Rack now! Thanks alot!

Don't worry about the ratings, those are just there for general information. If you pick up the Legend Heavy and the Avid, they are not even close to being in the same family of rod, much less the same feel or action.

Beaver so you're saying the slingblade has a lot more flex than the old 8' H avid? I might have to check them out.

Yes it does, and it seems to all be in the top 1/3 of the rod.

beaver, how does the action of that new blank compare with the action on the legend mega swimbait blank? is the top-end action closer to the swimbait blank action or the big dawg blank action? personally i feel the mega swimbait blank is a great multi-purpose blank but too soft for the hard pulling db 10's.
thanks,
stan

The Big Dawg is the 8'6" XH, the Slingblade is the 8'6" Heavy. The Big Dawg has got some flex to the tip, but when you cast and fight fish, the bend is noticable half way down the rod. This flex is also why it is great for casting heavy lures. The Slingblade has a fast tip that you notice when you cast and fight fish and even work a lure. The rod bends in the top 1/3, making it easier to throw lighter lures, but it can also handle some of the bigger stuff.
Like I said in a previous post, I was most impressed with the casting abilities of both rods. You feel the rods load up and launch the lure. If you try too hard, your effort will over-ride the flex in the rod. They must have designed these rods for old gys like me, because the easier you take it, the easier it is to cast. The rods do all of the work. I don't know if you guys golf, but I can only liken it to hitting a really expensive driver and feeling the difference.
I don't fish DB10's all day long like some of you guys can, but I didn't have any problem with the Slingblabe model. I think that the Big Dawg might wear you out from using a rod that isn't designed to throw such a light lure.

What do you guys think of the split grip? I'm thinking about getting one before next season but I'm not sure whether I should opt for the split grip or standard handle. Thanks.

What's the handle length? Is it the same split grip and solid? Is the split grip just like the Mega bait bass split grip?
