Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Okay, here is the latest article for Musky Hunter or Esox Angler. Something truly unique. Loons are a very important aspect on slow days of musky fishing. If it has been a long day with no activity, I go on a hunt - searching out loons. This has nothing to do with loons hanging around likely musky spots with lots of baitfish. It's a lot more dynamic than that. It is actually the loon-picture-musky connection. Here's a story to back up my findings. Dad and I were out fishing yesterday. Had one fish nip a Curly Sue at the boat but didn't get hooks, and that had been it for the day. After many hours and another spot, there was a group of 4 loons swimming around. Two started swimming directly at the boat. Dad commented on how he took a picture of a loon the day that I caught the 48 I put on the board last week. He told me he was going to take a picture of these too and see if it put a fish in the boat. Dad took the pictures, then said "There, I took the pictures of the loons." It was literally less than a second after he said that, when this fish hit my 11" Curly next to the boat. Both times the pictures have been taken, the loons have been attracted to our baits or the boat, and have been swimming towards us. There was also at least a group of two loons each time. We need to do more experimenting with this technique. We have theorized that it may require more than one loon, and that the loon may need to be interested in you. We have not discovered yet if you can just randomly sneak up on any loon and have it work yet. There is more testing to be done, and I will keep everyone informed with our results. By the way, I forgot to change out of my "LEVIS" shirt. I was kicking myself, because I knew it would be tough to catch fish wearing anything preppy like that at all. This only goes to show you the power of the loon... curleytail Edited by curleytail 7/24/2008 11:59 AM Attachments ---------------- musky loon.jpg (122KB - 144 downloads) 44 musky.jpg (208KB - 158 downloads)

Posts: 4266 | I've already had them scare the crap out of me when they followed my lure to the boat. I like them just as much as Mergansers and Cormorrants.

Posts: 12 | I have said for years you don't need to hire a guide just fish where the loons are. I don't think I have ever fished a good spot and not had a loon near by.

Posts: 59 | We went up to AML for opener, and loons were still on their nests, and both spots we saw loon pairs we had fish up. Didn't land any by the loons though.

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | This thread clearly demonstrates the symbiotic link between muskie fisherperson's & loon's (the bird). As we all know- our spouses, family members, and friends think we who pursue muskies are bit loony, i.e., we spend undisclosed amounts of money & energy to chase a fish that drives us crazy, and when we catch one , we let it go! Some religion's believe that those who have departed are reincarnated as another animal. I would propose that those loon's are reincarnated muskie hunter's and that they are simply responding to an invisible urge to help their kindred spirits by herding the muskies toward your boat/lures. Therefore, I'll say it here, and my wife & friends will support it 100%, i.e., I am a loon at heart! Al

Posts: 1168 | There has been stuff written on a general wildlife connection before. Not sure if it was Maina, Pearson, maybe DougJ, can't recall. Even when there is no change in a weather forecast and I start noticing our cows acting a bit odd it's worth taking note so I've done so on days when I know I'll be on the water. Pretty amazing going back and looking at that stuff and seeing a correlation to certain trends. It's not just loons that can tip you off. So much other stuff as well so it pays to be observant of such things.

Posts: 93 Location: Minneapolis, MN | This loon was diving under my boat and wouldn't go away even when I'd move. Turns out panfish were schooling under the boat. Attachments ---------------- loon.jpg (68KB - 150 downloads)

| out on my lake we have 4 pairs of loons and 1 3-some..yeah I guess even loons get freaky....tonight I mentioned this post to my friend and we were like wtf let's try it....no dice! Ended up losing one nice fish though at 9:30, exploded on a hawgbuster and came straight for the boat...then hit a few more spots through the rain and picked up a couple nice smallies on the same bait...fun, but no luck with the loons... The weird thing is that the loons are usually in the same places for the weather pattern at the time....THAT I have noticed...never on any "notable spots" either... | |||

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Andy, I never said the fish automatically makes it to the net. It will get them to hit (I think anyway), but the rest is up to the angler to boat the fish, LOL! Also, it's not necessarily automatic. I caught the 48 last week about two hours after the loon pictures were taken. Keep trying though. Just like fishing with Bulldawgs, suspended fish, etc., it may take a few tries to get confidence in this technique. I also believe you may need to know when to apply it - It's something that can be overused in my opinion. How much do you think Musky Hunter will pay me to write this article? curleytail

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | muskie24/7 - 7/24/2008 2:23 PM Hmmmm! Should I hire a guide or a photographer...LOL :( Well, I will guide you to the proper loons, my Dad will photograph them, and if everything adds up that should put you on fish. That does, however, mean that you will need to be hiring both of us! I'll charge a relatively low loon-guide fee of $300, and my Dad is really generous and only charges $200 photography fees. What date would you like me to pencil you in for? Our calendar is uh...pretty open right now. curleytail

Posts: 4266 | I bet if you rigged a sucker on a quick-strike rig and then clipped it to a loons foot with a planer board release, you'd be in fish every day. I've had better luck following bald eagles, or are they following me, waiting for brain-impaled pike to be released?
