I have gone through numerous reels this season because the anti reverse keeps going out. I have had the reels redone by a reputable shop and had the grease or oil changed to cure the problem, it lasted about a month, same problem, now with the cold season approching its bound to happen even more frequently. I've ran calcutta's, luna's, abu's etc, I am thinking of stepping up to a 700te or a Daiwa saltist with levelwind, is this the cure? or do you just buy enough reels and keep changing them out as the season goes on? I am primarily ripping big jakes, grandma's,mag dawgs and pounders, I need a reel that will hold up especially this fall. What's your recommendation? Thanks Mike

You've done this on say a 400 TE? I fish a lot of the same lures with reels you mention and haven't had any problems. Are you having the bail snap closed during casting? That's the only way i've ruined any reels, nothing will hold up to that....

Yes a 400te,but its been the best of the bunch so far, last november I could lift a mag dawg out of the water at the boat and bounce the rod up and down (like trying to shake weeds off) and you could literally watch the handle slip backwards and the dawg would lower towards the water and I know for a fact I am not the only one who has gone through a 400te.

*all pretty heavy lures, make sure you're thumbing and STOPPING the bait before it hits the water. MAKE SURE YOU ARE NEVER starting to reel only AFTER that bait is stopped!!!! the jakes and grandmas will be hard on the reels because of the jerking and twitching, but the other baits only hurt the reel if you're engaging the reel before the baits stop their outward motion.

i toss big cranks with a 401TE as well, and i had some slippage such as you describe when under pressure. turns out it was caused by a rusty IAR bearing, really a user/care problem (me!). i sent it in to Shimano and they refurbed the entire reel, it's been lock tight since then.
i've been using the Curado 300DSV for big jerkbaits, suzies and pounders; i keep thumb pressure on the spool when ripping to reduce the strain a bit and it's been bombproof. best general-purpose reel i've ever used...

I've been using the St Croix A300's for 3 years now. Same reel as the Luna. The oldest one started doing that earlier this year. The problem is a bad Roller Clutch in the handle assembly. It's only supposed to spin one way but starts to slip after it wears. Easy to replace on your own with a good parts diagram as a guide. St. Croix sent me 3 free ones so i had a spare on hand. I would imagine all your reels have the same type of clutch.

i carry 2 Penn 975s, 3 Morrums, a Trinidad and 7000 all in my boat as spares...there is no reel made that can hold up to the pounding we give them...at least that I have found...they all break...carry spares!
I had a brand new 400TE go out 3 days after buying it...neat.

Let me know when you found one as I can’t find any reels that hold up in terms of the anti-reverse kicking out. The ripping and jerking of cranks is what really does it. Knock on wood the best reel so far for me has been the Calcutta 400B.

My fix has been to remove the sleeve out of the roller bearings, get as much oil/water as I can out of the rollers, very lightly oil the sleeve and reassemble. Works for awhile and then I have to repeat. Too much oil/water in that bearing is what does it. I got sick of sending reels into Daiwa, Abu, St. Croix, etc… only for it to happen a short while after. In fact my Luna started back-reeling a day after I got it back from a complete bearing replacement and complete reel clean/re-lube.

Has nothing to do with engaging the reel early as I don’t do it.

I have just noticed a similar problem yesterday on the water. Just after catching a smaller 'ski, I picked up the rod with a normal Dawg on it. The Dawg dropped to the water and I thought I bumped the something. I reeled up and shook the Dawg, sure enough down it went only the reel handle didn't move, just the inside line holder gave way. Didn't notice any problem when fight the fish or after dueing normal fishing activity, just when holding the Dawg up. Is this something that can be fixed by a novice or does it need to go in?
Thanks,
Labs

Have the same problem. It is the no stretch super lines we use. Never had any of these problems with mono years ago. Reel manufacturers need to beef up on the gearing???
