| The discussions from the past few months got me thinking.
Where do you think you have the best chance to catch a 50 plus incher? I'm trying to plan my trips for next year. I'm biased in that my only real exposure up north is to LOTW. Please add options freely. |

Location: Wausau | I choose Vermilion based off of experience and the number of 50's seen over the last few years. However, if I were to pick most likely, it would be Green Bay in late fall and the yearly trolling bite - just my opinion. |

Location: In the cabbage | I voted Lake of the woods, I personally have never fished it but my father and his friends have, with great luck. While they dident boat a 50 on there last trip they did raise quite a few.

All those lakes in the Cass Lake area hold good potential, and you can fish 2 or 3 a day. |

| I'm with spleef. Plenty of fatties get burned on the bay each year, creating more overnight heroes than Beijing. Simple as dropping the baits and crankin the marley. |

I agree to some extent. If you want a FISH OF A LIFETIME, IMO, hit the St. Larry. If you are "just" looking for a 50" then it's pretty tough to beat ANY of the ones mentioned above. The St. Lawrence is a low density fishery. Unless you are absolutely dialed into the specific depths, structure, and baits that are producing you might have a good shot at a 50". I have been on the river (not fishing, diving/snorkeling) and it is immense with more underwater structure than you could shake a fist at. Takes a lot of knowledge to fish that body of water correctly. That said, if you don't have the time or wherewithal to learn the intricacies of a body of water, then your best bet is to go somewhere with a high density of 50s (i.e. Green Bay, Vermilion, St. Clair, Mille Lacs, etc.).

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Vermilion would be my choice even though I have not had the chance to fish it yet. But, from what all my friends and clients say about it that is the place to go this year and next. Hire a good guide up there like Matt and use that day to learn what to do the next few days on your own. I would bet you have a great shot at sticking your fifty. Do your homework and get up there at the prime time, the odd are in your favor then.
For a trophy of a life time I would go East. Sit next to Mike for a week and you will get to hold a magnum. I had the pleasure of fishing with him years ago. I can only imagine the new spots and zones he has now.

| I am surprised that Vermilion is beating Mille Lacs.... seems that many more true monsters are coming out of Mille Lacs than Vermilion. Many more 50 pounders coming out of Mille Lacs than Vermilion every fall. My opinion, Vermilion is definitely second to Mille Lacs.... maybe not this year, but certainly in the past five years. |
