Normally the turnover effects on trout water such as Manitou are very minimal, if even noticeable at all. Some of the boys up north are saying that because water temps never got high this year that turnover everywhere, in Canada at least, will almost be non existant.

I agree with Brain. In infertile waters (where fish can hang below the thermocline which includes trout waters) turnover would not play a huge part in fish movement. However, in very fertile waters like here in southern WI we know that fish spend very little time in the deeper water because of its lack of oxygen content (due to decaying matter). And when it flips (normally around the 1st week in October here on the Madison Chain) all kinds of gunk and smells arises to the surface when it mixes. Then at that time fishing is messed up. Not much of that happening in those waters north of the border.

If I remember right its around 58 degree surface temps. In that area, though, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Whatever lake you're on, if its in the middle of turnover you can probably go 20 minutes down the road and find one that's either done or hasn't started yet. And there's always the rivers...

it's going to be a different year than those of recent past .... sure it's a water temp. thing but it's also a mixing and not a flop which brings into our odd year where if we were lucky there might have been 3 days with overnight lows in the 70's so although the surface temps. on some waters may have seen even traditional numbers ... the overall body of water was cooler than normal which suggests a very different timing and rate of mixing known as the turnover.

i remember jason sloan making a post that he was seeing mixing and it was quite a few weeks ago ...

with the variety of water in the vilas and oneida county areas there's never a reason to "stay away" due to turnover ... there's always a body of water that's not in that situation on any given weekend.

If you are on the manitou , you are pretty much stuck --the option of the "lake down the road" in not viable. thanks MD
