I have a 50hp Merc 4stroke that sputters and dies when the throttle is opened up. After this happens the motor will not start and needs to be pull started. The motor idles fine and runs okay at slow speeds but that is it. Also, I have a LMS 527 hooked up to the rear starting battery that shuts down when the motor is started and this is a relatively new development.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas as to what the issue might be?

Thanks.

Sounds like a weak starting battery, if it's an efi it might draw battery power for the injector system too, so they might be related. If it's a carb engine it sounds like a blocked jet?

check out the specs on you crank sensor, we have had many 50 an 60 mercs that the sensor was too far out. this is an easy adjustment.

Thanks for the replies so far. It is a carb engine and the mechanic checked the jets and they seem to be clear. Not sure about the crank sensor specs but I will have him check that too.

Thanks,
