I know, this thought makes me cringe, but the other day I accidentally ran my boat without oil for about 5 minutes... Not sure if I did any damage, but now i'm super paranoid. Checking and double checking if i'm running mixed gas. There's a tank in the garage that i'm not sure if I mixed, and i'm afraid to use it. I'm loosing my mind.

- do you think I did any damage in the 5 minutes of no oil?
- how long do you think it would take to harm the engine with unmixed gas?
- can you tell by looking at gas if it's mixed?

I can't wait for a 4-stroke

How hard were you running your motor in the 5 minutes? Did the gas have ANY oil in it - like from before you added the non mixed gas? If you weren't running hard, everything is probably totally fine. I think when I had my 2 stroke Evinrude, you were supposed to be able to run the motor at 1500 RPM or something like that if the "no oil" alarm was going off. Gas has 'some' lubricating properties in itself without additional oil.

You may be able to tell is gas is mixed by looking at it. I know I can usually tell with my 24:1 mixed gas. Not sure if it would be as easy to see the difference in color with the more common outboard mix of 50:1. Also seems to depend on the color of oil you are using.

My guess, if only ran 5 minutes, and you did not see any bad effects right away, is that you'll be fine.

I wasn't running the motor too aggresively. The gas had NO oil in it. it was a fresh tank from the pump. It has run well since then, so I believe i'm fine. I was just curious how critical the oil is. and how long it would take for an engine to sieze up without oil. I hope I never find out.

Thanks for all the info

You may have had enough in the line and engine to run for a few minutes, so it's possible no harm was done at all. if you'd have scored a piston wall or something of that ilk, you'd know by now, i think.

When I was about 12 my dad bought me a used minibike that ran on mixed gas. I ran it for about an hour pretty hard b4 it locked. That was my first and last mini bike.

I was told that if it is an engine that has run mixed gas for quite some time that it will be well lubricated and doing what you did should cause no reason for concern.
