| Can you use a closed faced reel like a zebco 33 for muskie fishing or do you have to use a bait casting reel

Location: Yahara River Chain | Zebco 33 would not be able to handle the normal size muskie baits we throw. You'd be lucky if it could handle the small muskei baits we throw.
Learn to use a baitcaster. Its not that hard. |

Location: NYC (and many weeks in MN during summer) | you'd burn the gears out on the first day. In fact, the only braided line appropriate closed faced reel is the abumatic. I bought it for my 7 year old, and even this reel can't handle it.

Location: oswego, il | It only has a 3 to 1 retrieve. You will not like lures of any kind with a reel like that. Now if you need to use a close faced reel, look at the diawas and the zebco pro-staff. The pro-staff is cheaper but works really well. I have had these reels for my kids and they worked well for them untill they learned to use baitcasters. They have faster retrieve speeds too. Put superline on them as well. |

| I bought my son a rhino push button reel spooled with 15 lb mono. He is only 5, but can easily pull in smaller bucktails and x raps. He had a nice fish follow and talked about it for days.
I could not imagine getting him into a baitcaster yet. I would be picking out bird nests all day.

Location: NYC (and many weeks in MN during summer) | agreed cbuf, you can't beat a closed faced reel for children. Like I said above, I bought my daughter the abumatic and spent $60 for it. She's 7 now and has had itfor 2 years. It's hard enough to keep young children interested for long periods of time. Why add more "boring" time picking out backlashes and fouled casts?
But the original poster is presumably an able bodied mature male with the ability to conquer using a baitcaster. Closed face reels and these modern baitcasters are like comparing apples and elephants.
To the original poster, I believe that you get what you pay for and always buy the best quality I can afford. I use almost exclusively shimano products, from calcutta te's, currados and a trinidad. All expensive but used HARD without ever a problem!!! On the other hand, the one reel I bought trying to think outside the box, the okuma red Isis, has given me a spool engagement problems out of the box on the second cast. At $150 I thought idfind a less expensive alternative to my go to gear. Lesson learned!
With that said, Daiwa saltist just put out what has been a traditional tough, strong and durable salt water stud of a reel with a levelwind, making it one of the most durable strong and now versatile reels available to Muskie fishermen. At $169 it's a steal and could easily be priced $100 more.
Sorry for the longwinded response, but I hate to see guys go out and spend $100 on an abu for their first and only Muskie reel, only to have it blow out after very little use. Use the search function here and research abu problem threads. It's like 30 to 40% of the responders (conservative numbers) complaining of abu products. Thank god they have good service, but it wont help you when your out on the water after spending money on gas, hotel or whatever else and you spend money, without a functional reel

hefty claim for a reel that hasnt been in use for a year.

Location: oswego, il | cbuf, i should have mentioned the rhino too, it's a better reel now, the outside chrome area used to bust off them but they fixed it. Good reel for kids.
if your looking for a cheap baitcaster, look on ebay for a garcia 6500 or a similarly priced reel. |
