A couple of weeks ago there was a discussion about WTDs focusing on Weagles, Jackpots and other like baits. I bet a couple of Weagles find their way into my fishing life ths season and am also real curious about the Hoodinies. Anyone want to toss out their two cents on this bait...?

Hoodinies are sweeet. I believe its one of the first walk the dog topwaters made with a soft plastic tail. I've caught fish in Illinois and Canada on it and witnessed a 50"r caught on a bright, calm, and sunny afternoon. I would definetely buy one Scott.

LOVE IT! Can't say enough about the bait and its maker, Jake Schinderle. You can swap out the tails for any kind you fancy and each grub gives the bait a completely different action. Short, stumpy Kalin's Mogambos will give the bait a tight zig-zag, longer tailed grubs will give it a wider zig-zag. Terrific hybrid swoosh/ploop sound, too. Hope this helps.

I will be the one bad apple...I don't care for them.I think the tail interferes with the action of the bait.I have tried to adjust the tail to "fix" the lure but it has never impressed me and the lure stays at home when I fish.If I were to rank it,it would be near the bottom of the list, sorry,I just don't like the bait...There's my 2 cents...
The weagle is has some weight, throws some water and they work.I do like them.If you want a WTD topwater that make some noise, try the Seducer,it wakes em up...

I should clarify,I have the Lil Hoodinie NOT the larger model.
I hope last post didn't seem like I was bashing,I wasn't,I just don't care for the action of the lure...Well Made, quality constructed lure.

I have never used a Hoodinie, but they look like nice baits. I just wanted to point out that now Mojo has a similar bait - the Wild Action series. Baldy came out with a Weagle with a soft plastic tail that looks pretty good! Don't want to take attention away from the Hoodinie, but the Wild Action Weagle is another option now. With the success I have had with the Weagle, the WA Weagle would be high on my list if I wanted to try a rubber tailed WTD bait.

And no, Baldy has not been paying me, nor has he threatened me any bodily harm if I did not say good things about his baits.

I would recommend the WA Weagle as well. Baldy put a lot of time in finding a tail that wouldn't comprimise the action of the bait. Same Weagle action with a tail.

Don't overlook the 10" Weagle either. It is a BIG bait, but surprisingly works easier than the 8"er, and moves a ton of water.

Thanks, Gents, for your perspectives but now I gotta get a couple of both.
Too many baits, too little time: further incentive to live to be 100.

I did a search and found this thread. I bought two off MF a few years ago and the Hoodinie magnum highrider in black is my go to bait. (the lil hoodinie has caught a few fish but the magnum is the one to buy). It is easier to work than a weagle and you can work them much faster. It runs better than any WTD bait I've thrown and it has a tail. are these still made? THe one I have is beat up

MuskyPA,

I've got a few if you want to do a swap. I believe they are the magnums. Give me the specs and I'll check (they certainly aren't very small). Email me: [email protected]

I believe Musky Tackle Online carries them. If they don't, Aaron might have Jake Schinderle's contact info.

I don't think any WTD bait can be worked 'faster' than a Weagle, I can literally scoot the thing side to side in a blur. I'm sure the lure you are talking about is a great bait, but in the interest of accuracy...

Really? How can you reel faster than the reel will allow while working the lure??

viper is a lot faster

I disagree with that. Vipers will blow out far too easy when worked fast, they nose down, as well.
I'm with Steve on this one, you can't work the Weagle fast enough sometimes.
The other thing about the Weagle, particularly the 10" is that you can move it 3 feet, while only moving it back to the boat 5". It will move far to the side, or dance in place and just aggravate far better than any WTD I've fished.

if you really know the viper you are supposed to know something they have lead you can add or remove AND ANYWAY WHIT OR WITHOUT they run faster.every video of weagle prove one thing, the bait work better when slowly retreive.another funny bs i have read is when players tell the jackpot blowup a lot more than weagle, for 3 to 5 oz of difference you will tell me that will make some magic when a 30 lbs+ grab the baits? ridiculous whit a big R!!!anyway think and trow what you want i dont really care...........

This thread was just brought to my attention. I have been making the Hoodnie for around 6 years or so. I've never thrown a viper or weagle but i'm sure they are great baits. (Much better than mass produced baits w/ .072 screweyes)

The one thing I will say is that it is not a good idea to buy used wooden baits (WTD's especially) second hand. No two wooden baits run the same so if you buy baits off ebay there is a good chance they won't be as good because they have already been tested. I've bought a lot of AHL tubro topwaters off ebay and most don't run good.

I remember when I used to buy 6 reefhawgs hoping to get one that would run right. Thats just they way wooden baits are. If you buy a weagle or viper that doesn't run well it does not mean the weagle baits are bad lures. The blanks I use are up to .5 oz different in weight depending on where they are cut from the same tree. This variance makes a big difference in action, but can also lead to perfection. Hope this helps.

Re: Wooden baits on eBay.
Almost every Suick I have ever bought (oevver 20) off of eBay has been perfect. I ahve bought one used Weagle too and that ran perfect as well.

I asked a simple question. I run a Weagle VERY fast some days, as fast as I can reel and twitch that lure. How can any other walk the dog lure run 'faster' than the fastest I can reel and move the rod? I've fished the Viper, too, great lure.

And yes, I have seen the Jackpot blown out of the water much more than the Weagle. I'm not sure if it's hook placement or weight, and don't care. I get more hook-ups with the Weagle, and believe me, I've fished the Jackpot and Doc alot. My personal observation working walk the dog type lures.
