| Hello all,
This topic may be alreay in a thread (my apologies if so).
As I'm burning through reels is there a better reel for these
big blade bucktails?
Please let me know what you use, and the aproximate retail
cost? I've seen a few of the one weeks pay types and it's not
in the budget any time soon.

I dont know what your budget is, but i have found the Penn 675 to be the absolute best. I think it goes for about 260???? Which is not cheap, but it not 350 either. My TE isnt as good, my luna isnt as good, my calctutta b isnt as good.
If you can stand the size and weight of the abu 7000, that is also an excellent choice, but i can not. I like to palm the reel while bucktail fishing and the 7000, to me, is like holding a softball on top of your rod trying reel in a big bait.
I have heard good things about both the trinidad and saltist, but as of now they dont have levelwinds, so i dont bother.
In my opinion, the gear ratio on the reel is the most important aspect on a big bladed bucktail reel. If you can find something with solid gearing and a LOW gear ratio, and install a power handle you will be happy.
Lot for something with a low gear ratio of 4.5:1 or less. The Penn 975 is bult like a tank and pulls these baits with ease.

| Just bought a Penn 975 slightly used but exc. shape on eBay for $150. That is my second one they are awesome. |

Daiwa just made the saltist with a levelwind. Salt water power/torque andbuilt like a tank. A relative steal at only $160. There is currently a thread ongoing in this very section of this forum.
IMO, nothing beats the trinidad. With that said, if I didn't have that to burn (and I mean burn, like I can EASILY blow those dbl 10's out of the water at will), I'd now own the saltist.

Just got a 975 Penn and it's the best so far. Great power handle, and if you palm the reel it's comfortable, major power on the retrive.
ABU 7000's, a great reel, with power to burn, but not as comfortable if you palm the reel (I have lots of calluses from holding the reel). Once you get used to the size of a 7000 they are great.
Had pretty good luck with an Okuma 400 IDx with a power handle. Probably my first choice for folks who don't fish every day. Price is good and the reel is dependable.
Not sure about the others as I've never used them. Heard some good things about
the Shimano's

Location: Iowa Great Lakes | Been throwing them the last couple weeks on a Curado 300 right or wrong it works for me thats all that counts. I also throw them on a 400 Corsair and Okuma Induron all depends on conditions and my mood. |

Double 12's with no problems. |
