| Since muskies cant see the top side of any baits and mostly see upwards we often spend too much time picking the best side profile on baits.
Maybe we should concentrate more on the belly, I have been doing research on this, mostly in the boat and orange bottoms are the baits that are the most chewed up in my boat.
But why orange?
Is the side profile that important? or is it just the belly color and action. |

|
| I agree with the orange as the most chewed up color, next to that I'd say white is mine,as a lure rolls and flashes maybe it stay more visable from below,I have notice that orange belly baits draw alot of attention to themself.May be it's not that common on a fish to have orange bellys so it stands out in the crowd which make it more of of easier target.

| I can not tell you why but orange is a confidence thing for me. Perhaps it is because the majority of my successful baits have some orange on them especially on the bottom. |

| Pink... HMMMMM
Makes my wonder why my wife catchs all those fish on her 7" pink Slammer. |

| Jason,
the night Shinner pattern is producing well this year. Pink is not my first choice but the fish seem to like it.

| I like white bellied lures. More natural and good flash. If it has orange, I like a more subtle orange for stained water. Not so much of a bright orange. |

|
| Just to ad point---My favorite walleye lures also have orange bellies, clear or stained water. |

| It seems to me that the underside of most freshwater bait fish (perch, walleye, suckers, carp, etc.) is within the range of white to yellow to orange and even brown.
On my home lake there is an abundance of these kinds of baitfish and the muskie really feed heavily on these fish. As the muskie predominantly sees (and feeds, I would guess) from below, the part of their prey that they would see most often is the belly.
I think the reason the belly is white (or light coloured) is nature's way of providing camoflauge to the baitfish. You know survival of the fittest or something like that. When I make (and paint) my own baits I focus more on the belly and sides than I do the top, exactly for the reasons in the previous posts. What I don't understand is why some top water baits have elaborate details on the top of the lure when it's not even in the water. Would a muskie even see it? I doubt it!
I have no scientific evidence to verify anything, just observations and a bit of rambling.

| I must say a red throat, an orange belly and most definetely a fluorescent pink belly. My best suick is one in this color: grey top/silver sides/hotpink belly! But I must add that all fish taken on this lure were caught in cristal-clear waters. If this can be explained, I don't know. Fact is that in Irish clear lakes pink lures score well, for instance the giant nilsmaster in the color with the black bars and hotpink back. |

| I would have to say that I have caught more Muskies on crankbaits with an Orange belly then any other color. But in the past five years the gap has closed between,Orange and Hot Pink bellys.Only having Hot Pink on bellies of crankbaits for the last five years,I would say that in those last five years the Hot Pink has been the best producer, especialy for the catching of Hawg's.Then again when the water is stained the Orange belly seams to work better for me,but when the water is gin clear the Hot Pink is the best.

| Fish view bellies much as we do I think.....a variety of belly colors exist for that very reason! For instance, ever seen a bright red belly on a girl at the pool/beach?....I left them alone ''cause they didn''t have enough sense to use sun screen; a lilly white belly signifies near death experiences and they were also avoided....but a light brown belly made me crawl up a sand dune for a closer look! Orange bellies showed a "hurried" bottled tan look + black bellies scared me; looked bruised. I rarely paid much attention to "sides" but did have my butt kicked at a clam bake by a 1-armed girl that had a different look to her side that gave the false impression that she was weaker than the others....perhaps fish see the same way????? I guess what I''m trying to say is I like a large rotund belly that you could sink a an RC bottle into![:0] [;)] [:sun:] |

| FLASHBACK FRIDAY! |
|

|
| Yellow bellied lures are the most chewed for me(many of the baits are orange and yellow), followed by white. |
|

|
| We've got a reef hawg that we put a long strip of silver holoform sticker and for some reason that is always a good lure. I think it resembles a bait fish being injured. Now they got the new "Holoform Hawgs", I wish they could have put a strip on the belly!
