Thinking about trying Fluorocarbon leaders next year and was wondering,

Who out there has used them, and what do you think of them

Do you feel that in clear or pressured waters it gives you more of a stealth approach and it up's your fishing success?

And do you buy them or make your own?

Do they make a difference?

Used them mainly for Frogzilla's because a steel one made it sink. Will try them this year with trolling.
Used Smity's and ISG.....100#'ers

i think they get more bites, but what good are they if you can''t land them? took a 35"er on a bobbie this spring on an 80lb flor. leader. the lure and leader was completely outside her mouth when i unhooked her, but the leader was cut almost 1/2 way thru in 2 spots! if a 35"er can do this, whats a 35lber gonna do to it?!?!? i''ll stick with steel, thank you... couldn''t bear to loose a favorite lure or harm a big slimie by leaving a bait in her face...

Totally unnecessary to use a ''clear'' leader. The leader is invisible for the most part during the attack anyway, and since muskies are Myopic, too fuzzy for them to make out. Besides, the fish don''t know what a leader is anyhow, so why take a chance??

This is from a guy who uses 60# sevenstrand for WALLEYES(BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!) and has no problems getting bit...

Hi,
I used #100 flourocarbon leaders most of the year, didn''t have a probelm. I fished Eagle Lake twice this year, so just kind of went with it all year. I did use steel on dark water a couple of times on Mohawksin. I like the flourocarbon that you can tie a knot with, some flourocarbon is so stiff that you can''t. My friend swears he got way more hits on his sucker than his fishing buddy, because he had a flourocarbon leader above the rubberband.

As a muskie nut that fishes alot of differant lures including jigs. I will agree with those of you fishing steel leaders. About 6 or 7 years ago I was fishing a tourney here in Western WI. We had a very large fish 35#s or so, follow twice on a Reef Hawg. The second time the fish turned away and slowly disappear into the depths. I pitched a jig out in front of this fish. She ate the jig, I set the hook, good hook up, the everything was gone. She bit through my 35# test sevenstrand wire leader. Still have the piece of leader and the swivel here someplace. Hard mono or flourocarbon? Not on the end of any of my lines, steel is the real deal. Even then you can have one break or bitten through.......but only if your are really unlucky.......LIKE ME....

Mr. Esox69,
It's about time we hear some insightfull blurbs from you. I need to hear some more of them, especially Aug 10 & 11th, 2002 for the Butternut Lake Muskie Tourney. Remember that one? The one where I stuck a nice 40.5"er during prefishing and it cost us $5500.00? But what a nice Xmas card it made![;)]

Have used them for bait/shad for stripers + make them up for certain saltwater fish but never used them for toothy fish....almost have to have them for fish like Mackerel etc. but the chance of sliceage is there.....trolling has presented no probs....yet!

Been using 100# Flouro leaders from Smity for a couple seasons. Never had a problem with them. I like them mostly because the limp material lets crankbaits move more naturally, not because I think steel scares fish. I still use singlestrand on 'hair and jerks though.

I make mine out of 80lb. seagar and have not had a problem. I use them for trolling and casting. I have not had a failure yet. I do not pinch down on the ends of my crimps which may cut into the line.

I have been making my own using 60# by seaguar. I mainly use them for the light stuff such as smaller crankbaits and spinnerbaits in the spring. I haven't had any bite offs yet. I just hope I am not playing with fire from reading the prevous posts.[:0]

Bill,I have been using them for a few years.
When trolling and I want the baits high in the water colum.I use 200 pound seaguard. We have clevis sleeves in the bends or loops to slow down wear of the snaps.Ours are doubled crimped and the loop is a little wide to give the bait a natural free swimming swing.

Anywhere from 3 footers to 5 footers. When I decide to put baits deep.100 pound is good.Again sleeves are used in the loops and bends.
Andy Morraler makes all my leaders. We also use 200 pound 9 inch for casting. The 100 pound stuff wears more but I have never lost a fish due to fluro carbon.Trust me some of the fish we boated are worthy of break offs. Some leaders I have are 2 years old, with no nicks or scuffs.Seaguard is expensive but the real deal when it comes to fluro.
I tend to agree with Steve on this one,not sure it realy makes a difference.Personaly I like it very much.
take care

Hi,

Where you guys getting your 100# Seaguar Flourocarbon? I used Pline last year. But I've heard great things from Seaguar.

Thanks in advance,
Don
