What do most skie fisherman do at night with the headlamp on or off, or only when fish is on? I saw last year a boat using a spot light from the back of the boat, while front guy was using a double cow girl, spoting the lure as soon as it hit the water, this seems wrong?

The first time I ever went night fishing was on a super clear lake. I decided I was going to keep the light on, to see if I would get any follows in the dark. I got lots of follows from bass, some walleyes, and saw 2 skis around 40". After seeing 2 muskies, I shut the light off for the rest of the night and caught a 43.5" within an hour. It was the only fish I caught that night, but I always keep my light off until I get a fish on.
Oh, and yes, everytime I saw fish while the light was on they would always turn away or start to sink back down when they got into the light.
Hope that helps.

Off, your eyes can get accustomed too the night in about about 45 minutes.

The darker it is in the boat the better for me. I use a light briefly when there is a backlash to pick out, a fish to unhook, or a snap that doesn't want to fit into a lure eye. Then it takes me another 15 minutes to get back to where I can see again. No locator backlight on either unless it's a "new" spot . My eyes don't adjust to light levels very quickly so being as dark as possible is the way to go for me.

I don't keep my head lamp on-but.........

The State of WI Regs pg 13 say:

? Every moored, anchored and drifting boat and other fixed and
floating structures, outside of designated anchorages or beyond
200 feet from the shoreline shall be lighted from sunset to sunrise
by a white light visible all around the horizon. No other navigation
lights may be displayed.

http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/es/enforcement/docs/BoatingRegs.pdf

Pretty tough to comply if the boat is dark.

I also leave mine off unless I need it to fight/net a fish, look for a new bait, whatever. I wish my headlamp had a red light on it, as I believe you retain your night vision. Also heard red doesn't spook game, not sure if it doesn't spook fish or not.

Also, I think to keep the light down a little in the boat you can put a white sock over the white marker light. Cuts down the sharp glars/intensity of the light, but is still visable for other boaters to see. I keep telling myself I need to try this out but never seem to have an extra sock along when I want to try it.

I put a glove over my boat light..it's looks like a lit up middle finger...heheh.

I leave my headlamp off...no need having another bug attractor.

off for sure...even on new moon nights with very little light leave your headlamp off...
get some of Stealth tackle night leaders with a glow bead built right in and you won't go banging into your rod tip w/ your leader..they rock...

I would never, ever try to dim your boat lights for any reason.

Those lights are to protect you and others.

I know people who have gotten into accidents due to people not properly displaying lights.

I've you've ever heard boats crashing into one another you know how horrifying that sound is.

I don't mind having the lights on, and have fished clear and dark water and caught multiple types of fish casting on short lines including lg and sm bass, walleyes, stripers and musky. I am not sure there is much effect from the light as opposed to darkness if the boat is moving slowly through the territory of the fish. I used to be real hyper about it but as I have fished more, and caught more, I don't sweat fishing with the boat lights on.

I never fish without lights in ANY kind of exposed position or on any busy lake. Risky business.

As someone said, I dim my back light often with a cap over it, mostly due to bugs. If a lake is nearly deserted, I'll turn out the lights and enjoy the night, but I will sometimes turn them back on in bad areas or where I need to gauge shoreline distance.
