Wondering if anyone has any experience with the RAM Rod Holder, such as this:

Can they hold up to a good strike? I've got depth finders on RAM mounts, but hadn't considered it for a rod holder option until I saw that thing.
The problem I have is this- I'm fishing out of an Alumacraft Phantom; absolutely great boat, and I love it more than most anything. But the sides of the boat aren't real amenable to the clamp-on style rod holders, and I'm a little concerned about ripping the cover on the bolt-on kind. The RAM mount would allow them to be detachable, with just the ram ball sitting there... which would be nice. But not at the cost of losing my whole rig if a decent musky were to crank on it.
If anyone's used them, or could suggest another option, I'd love to hear what you think.

Location: Lebanon,Mo | I used the Ram Rod holders with the ball mounts last year.There nice to adjust,but running a hard pulling bait and/or high speed while trolling they would slip even tightened as hard as i could turn them.I went to the Down-East holders this year and no problems no matter what I troll.Just my opinion....Fred. |

It seems like the best option, then, would be to put a couple rails or something on the sides of the boat that would allow the Down East holders to be detachable, so they won't get caught on the boat cover. I guess I'd rather not install a weak link for the sake of convenience... |

Location: SE, WI. | Russ; I love my Ram Rod holders. They are rail mounts that are attached to the ball mount! And yes, like the former post, there tends to be some slipage when moving fast speeds. BUT what I do is drill a small hole in the post and put a spring pin through the post to not allow the post to slip. I have well over 1,000 musky on them up to about 43Lbs and if there is a problem with the holders, they are lifetime warranty.
