Maybe I was wrong just googled "crossing the border to Canada" and got this.

Do Americans Need a Passport to Visit Canada?

By Jane McLean, About.com
Filed In:

1. Crossing the Canada Border

-December, 2007-

Before answering the question, "Do I Need a Passport to Visit Canada?" travellers from the States should understand that US and Canada border requirements are not necessarily the same but inextricably linked. For example, Canada technically does not require a passport for US citizens arriving by plane to Canada, however, the US does require a passport to get back in; therefore no passport - no boarding a plane to Canada.

The answer to the question, "Do I Need a Passport to Visit Canada?" depends on how you are planning to cross the Canadian border and when.
US Citizens Visiting Canada by Air
Since September 30, 2007, American citizens flying to Canada have needed a passport.

(In February 2007, the new passport requirements were relaxed for children. Read Crossing the Canada / US Border with Children.)
US Citizens Visiting Canada by Land or Water
As of Dec 21, 2007, passport requirements have been once again delayed meaning that US citizens arriving in Canada by land or water do not need a passport until at least summer 2009.

I believe you need a passport to fly, not to drive. You need a passport to drive next year.

yes i think you can drive or by boat goto canada without a passport. however i did read that someone would need necessary documentantion, like a state id or dl. and notarized birth certificate, i could be wrong mind you as i am an engineer not a customs expert. i just went through this same ordeal and just decided to be safe and get the passport. it arrived today and i leave for the lawrence next weds. lucky me.

I believe having all of your paperwork (passports) in order goes a long way in speeding up your crossings.

The government claimed it was required until they realized the amount of people who were without them, so they extended the deadline, but it is inevitable at some point they will be required.

The process to get a passport is minimal, more or less an hour out of a day that could be better spent sitting on the couch. Do yourself (and group) a favor and make sure that everyone has one.

Don't know why everybody is so concerned with having passports, don't need em til next year and crossing has never been a problem. Just don't wear tie die shirts and play Grateful Dead at the crossing with a bunch of fresh produce in the vehicle and you will be fine.

Technically you don't need them to go into Canada but you need them returning into the States and I believe it goes into effect this month. Not sure on the date.

Thanks guys. Funny story. On one Canada trip(I think 2002) we got called in my bud Erik decided he'd be cute and present his passport at the border. They wouldn't accept it, and made him go out to the truck to get his drivers license. hehehe.

you don't need a passport for 2008...not for Canada, not for the US

Just bring a bring certificate for when you come back, Canada has never asked me for one in 25+ trips
