I need to replace the batteries for my trolling motor. I'm looking at getting either the Optima D31M, or one of Cabelas Advanced Angler AGM's.
My question come from trying ot decide which one is best for my needs. The Optima has a reserve capacity of 155 mins and weighs 59.8 lbs. Cabelas AGMs are... 24 series 178 reserve capacity & 53.5 lbs, 27 series 180 reserve 62.5 lbs, and 31 series 205 reserve 84 lbs.

Now on the reserve capacity the AGM's seem better than the Optimas, and I've always been told reserve is the main thing to look at in deep cycle batteries. But I'm guessing there isnt going to be much difference between the 178(24 series) and the 180(27 series) but how about going up to the 205 of the 31 series, is the extra 27 mins of reserve make up for the extra 30 lbs each battery weighs(60 lbs additional between the 2)

I've been running the Evercell batteries, and they only weigh 48 lbs each with 200 mins of reserve, so I'm a little leery of going to batteries where each one will weigh almost as much as both of the ones I have now together!

So just how much difference will there be between a battery with a reserve of 178 and one with a reserve of 205?
Anyone have the Cabelas AGM's, and if so how do you like them? I know the optimas are a quality battery, but the reserve seems better on the AGM's. Just not sure which route to go!!!

it depends on your boat and how much big water you tend to fish imo. I have 31 size AGM's (Trojans) which are basically the same as Cabelas. run a 19 foot fiberglass deep v and i'm glad I have the 31s.
If you fish some big water and want to fish in big wind. get the 31s, 60 lbs shouldn't matter in your boat...
not having enough juice when the fish are biting isn't fun...get the big ones

My boat is a Lund Pro-V 1775 tiller(75hp Honda), and batteries are running a 24 volt 60lb thrust pinpoint motor and a pinpoint locator.

My current batteries are the Evercell Evertrolls, which were supposed to be some new battery technology, no lead or acid at all, but seem to have vanished from the market. I was happy with mine, but will have to switch to something different since these need replacing. (Will also need to add an onboard charger since the onboard chargers that came with the Evertroll's were for those batteries only. So if anyone has suggestions on a quality onboard charger please let me know.)

The 2 Evertrolls weigh 96 lbs total, going with the 31 series from Cabelas would bring that up to 168 lbs total, an increase of 72 lbs, or like carrying an extra kid with at all times. How much, if any, will that extra weight effect speed and gas consumption? Do I need to worry about the extra weight stressing the floor in rougher water?(The boat was made for a 24 volt system and seems to be beefed up a bit in the battery compartment, but it came with trays for a 24 series battery in it)

I know many guys are happy with their 31 series Optimas. So if the 24 series from Cabelas has more reserve and more CCA's does that mean it will run longer under the same load? If so then it seems like the Cabelas ones would be better, if their smallest one has longer run time than the largest Optima.

And if thats the case, how much longer run time will I find between the 24 series with 178 mins reserve, the 27 series with 180 mins reserve and the 31 series with 205 mins reserve? If the difference means the 31 will last 20 hours and the 24 only 8 then I'll go with the 31. If its more like 31 20 hours, 24 16 hours, I'll save some $$ and weight and go with the 24 for the few times I'm ever on the water longer than 12 hours without access to electricity.

I have the Cabelas AGM and did quite a bit of research before I got mine. They have a longer amp hour rating than any of the other batteries and are cheaper than the Optima's. Even Trojan didn't come close. I like mine for the high cranking for cold days, they don't freeze, mx free, don't leak, no watering, and the amp hour as I said. I can be in the boat in january and the motor cranks like it was summer.
