Posts: 909 | Hey Guys, With the full moon coming, can you guys help me underestand fishing around the moon and sun? If Sunrise is 6:00 AM and the sunset is 8:00 pm and moonrise is 7:00pm and moonset is 3:am What are the best times to fish! I understand that weather trumps all. Do any of you guys fish around these charts? Is there a noticeable differance? Any information would be great! Thanks...Brian Edited by muskie24/7 7/16/2008 5:38 AM

Posts: 785 | It isn't foolproof but typically (according to the moon secret charts anyways) you would have your best potential from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. On a more personal note I always like moonrise and would try to fish prior to it coming up so say 6 p.m. it 7:10ish, although at that rate it would be silly not to stick around for the potential sunset bite. Typically moon down is considered "good" especially close to the time it rises or just after it sets, and when it is closely timed to sunset/sunrise or a weather change it can really be good. To be safe though I'd fish when you can but just be aware of when it will be rising or setting so you can try to be on a good spot to take advantage of it. Sometimes it works like a charm, I've had many days when our one or two fish of the day came within 20 minutes of rise or set. Somedays though it seems as though it has no influence.

Posts: 159 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Joe Bucher says "90 minutes around the moonrise and moonset." I've found that to be true, Even the last two evenings i went out for half an hour- right at moonrise. Caught a muskie both times. I also concur with the charts mentioned in skunk's post. Just Big Muskies volume 2 has several giant fish that were caught and then the camera pans over to see the moon just starting to come up over the horizon. Moonrise for the full moon here is 8:06pm Friday, you can bet i'll be on the water!

generally always be on a good spot or come back to a big fish at any of the rises/sets for moon or sun if you can. moon down has generally been better for me as opposed to moon up. But some great nights have been had with a big full moon high in the sky and calm winds. always watch when the moon is setting and rising each day you are on the water and be casting a good spot/fish at those times for sure...it can be the only bite you get all day!

Posts: 32 Location: Brainerd, Minnesota | Both moonrise and moonset have been good for me the past week, but especially moonrise. They have been better than sunrise and sunset. I like to pay special attention to different "lake trends" that become evident after years of fishing. For example, Mille Lacs is notorious for it's short feeding windows. You will often get some heavy duty action that will last only an hour or so. Many times, this will be centered around some moon activity. Mille Lacs is also a great POST front lake for me. Most other lakes are the opposite (they're better pre-front and poor after). Oh, and if you are experiencing a longer feeding window on Mille Lacs that last for hours or even all day, you are experiencing something special indeed! There are some other lakes that I fish that have great feeding windows that you can pretty much count on which are definitely related to the full moon, moonrise, etc. The difference is that they are often much longer windows, and they are often much better in later summer or fall. Again, different lakes have their "trends" or "reputations". You can pay special attention to this, and duplicate your success year after year. In general, when I am guiding, I will always go based on the current local weather, but my trip timing will always include some moon activity. It helps that I am on the water all the time...sometimes 12-16 hours a day for many days on end. I'm kinda spoiled that way, but most of my hard core musky fishing buddies who have much less time try to time it so they are there before, during, and after a moon peak.
