I've got two large screen sonars that are currently hooked up to my starting battery. Are other people seeing a battery drain doing this. I think I may have to go to a dual system, but how are people hooking it up for alternator and on board charger. I have a single onboard charger currently just for the starting battery, do I just hook everything up in parallel and call it good or what.

The motor is a 200 Opti and I'm told that they use a lot of juice both on start up and a lot of thier alternator power while running. Which doesn't leave a lot for recharging the sarting battery.

I'm leaving for LOTW on Friday and don't need to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere. I do carry jumper cables to go from my trolling batteries if needed, but that is an emergency use that does not fix the bigger problem.
Thanks

Plunker,
Color units? If so, they can drain a battery down pretty good while the motor is not running. I'm gonna assume the battery is OK (may not be, but for the sake of this discussion we'll say it is). Do you have GPS with these units? I know with my Lowrances, I used to have a similar problem ... did a little digging and found out the GPS puck is always taking juice from the battery, wheter in use or not. Put an in-line switch (power interrupter) on the leads from the GPS, problem solved. Come off the lake, turn switch off, voltage is fine next time out. I would also recommend a dual-purpose battery instead of straight starting, helps a lot. Hope this helps.

You should be fine as long as your not putting your trolling motor down early in the morning and not going to start your main motor till eight hours later with all your sonars and anything else you might have running during the day. I'm running two Lowrance LCX-27 with gps all day off my starting battery and have never had a problem. However, I do run around a lot on the smaller waters I fish. But guest is right, the gps puck does draw electric current if you don't have a power switch on it.

Yes they are two color units. One 111 and a 112, there are already main battery swithches installed. It gets plugged in everytime I get off the water anyway. Battery is brand new. The problem is, is that I may be fishing a spot for 3 hours or more without starting the main engine.

Three hours I wouldn't worry about it personally. The battery should be fine. I've gone that long without having any issues; actually gone longer than that. It's when your exceeding 6 or more hours without running your main engine is when I'd be worried. Are you going to be running livewells, bilge pumps, radios or any other items that may draw on your starting battery?

I would check to make sure you have enough cranking amps in your battery for the 200. Some dealers will cheap you on the crank batteries putting in something much smaller than these big motors need to start. If you have a big enough battery, it should not be an issue, if it's undersized, just the draw from your units may be enough to leave you stranded.

Here you go sir. This link is from the Lowrance website. Under FAQ's. This is from 2006 so it does not include your 112 but should be the same as your 111. This shows just how much power is needed for lights on for your unit and just how much for lights off. Hope this helps.

Yes you will see the drain if you leave 2 big screens running for 2-3 hours with out firing up big motor. I know I guy who put second battery for starting just for this reason. Last fall I was running a Optima battery 800 cca 110 Rc and My 110 would run it dead enought not to start. Like Norm stated make sure you have a dual purpose 29 series or bigger battery. Not just a starting battery will not have the RC to keep up. Also you could shut the console one off while casting
