Posts: 1636 | Has anyone ever had a problem with the push button on the Bass Pro Maina reels? I have gone through 3 reels in about 4 months with the same problem. You push the botton down and it wont engage after turning the handle. They have no problem replacing the reel no questions asked, but it doesnt help when youre on the water. Does anyone know a fix or is it something you have to deal with? Thanks! Edited by Reelwise 7/20/2008 4:58 PM

Posts: 97 Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan | Had the exact same problem with 3 of those reels; all broke within a couple of months. Decided I would get it replaced one more time and this one has held up for a year and a half with no problems. I guess its just hit or miss with those reels. Im not going to get another one because like you said you could be screwed out on the lake if it messes up.

Posts: 303 Location: WI | I've now got 2 different problems with my BPS reel.....the first problem is when I depress the thumb button and cast, it will make a loud clicking noise as the bait is flying through the air.....it still casts, but it's very loud and annoying. Second problem started after reeling in a small Pike...now when reeling the lure in, it's 5x harder to reel. There's just a ton of friction there that shouldn't be.....this problem happened the first time I used the reel after putting the power handle on. Can I mail it back to any BPS, or is there a certain location reels need to go to get fixed?

Posts: 203 Location: Germantown, WI | There are two springs that attach to that mechanism, one at each end. I developed a similar problem on one of my older Pete Maina with the black finish. I ordered the parts through Outdoor World Rod and Reel Repair. I would recommend replacing both springs. That should fix it for you. You can order the parts over the phone at (417) 873-5274 Mon.-Fri. 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Central. The parts are pretty inexpensive, less than the shipping. I've found that ordering parts for these reels to be inexpensive and easy through Outdoor World Rod and Reel Repair. The reels are actually pretty easy to work on if you want to DIY.

| While I haven't been able to try my Pete Maina reel out yet, I have had the same problem (grinding sound on cast) with a Shimano Catala 200 (replaced, now OK). It was like the spool would not fully disengage at times. | |||

Posts: 16 Location: Edwardsville, IL | I have 4 of these reels and all have the same problem. I find these reels to be sort of an enigma. When they work, they work great, very smooth, zero backlashes, etc, but the other 90% of the time I end up cussing at them. I finally gave up and switched to Calcutta's.

Location: Northern Wisconsin | that happened to my abu reels, i heard its because when you cast you are starting the reel in the lure before its hit the water/ stopped moving. a way to fix it is to stop the line with your thumb right before you start reeling, that way you can still get bucktails moving right when they hit.

| For the record the maina reel is a pluger . It sound like you may just be able to soak them in oil and get them working. I have had that happen to some of my records and cleaning and oiling took care of it | |||
