I have Lowrance 3600C I bought last year and also picked up a Navionics (sp?) chip for MN, WI, etc... anyways I'm finding a number of lakes are way off. It will show me traveling on shore somewhere or I will be 100+yds off a reef or island when I'm right next to it. But I have been on a few lakes where it was dead on also. Do you think it is just chip error or is my gps messing things up some how? I know the maps are just an 'overlay' onto my gps screen and when the lakes are 'off' they are off in the same direction. Like shifting the map over.

Anyone run into these kind of issues.

Thanks.............

I'm new to this stuff, but saw what you describe happen on LOTW. Was fishing in a Ranger boat and when my partner went to mark a newly caught fish on a waypoint, the point ended up 10 ft up the bank. I think there is some inherent slop in the technology to begin with. I took a GPS course and was taught that GPS is always Plan B. Plan A being a paper map and compass. These tools are useful but not totally reliable, best bet is on what you can see and correlate with a paper map. m

I know what you mean about navigating with them. I picked one up to troll sunken islands/reefs in the fall when the markers are already pulled and when it's so far off I couldn't tell where I was on these reefs and didn't aid in my trolling what so ever. If I had to time to make a new trail and map it out then it would have been ok but I was hoping for more. If I remember correctly if I switched back to just my Lowrance screen I was back on the water (poor detail though and no depths of course) but the lake map would show me on shore. I've been thinking of getting a Lake Master chip but want to find out if it's my gps or the Hot maps that's a little off. I will be contacting Navionics and Lowrance for help/ideas but I'm always interested in hearing your guys experiences.

Thanks again.... Mike

I have one of the navionics chips and like you said, some of the maps are pretty accurate. What I have found is that the high definition, popular lakes are pretty accurate. Some of the less popular, non high definition maps are not very accurate at all... Actually they are WAY off! I guess these maps were generated from other sources such as DNR data, other map surveys, etc. What I have done on those bodies of water is use the chip map as a starting point and I then enter my own symbols to aid in being able to work an area.

I've had great luck with my Eagle Intellimap 500C and the Navionics Gold+ chip that I bought for it. It's been dead on since I started using it in the last month or so...

You gotta remember, there could be up to a 45ft error rate .. This isn't because of the hardware, you can blame the US AirForce for that

Well maybe it's just those certain lakes that are off. And they have been all low definition lakes. I haven't had a chance to try a high definition lake yet. I saw the 2008 LakeMaster chip has the lakes I really want in 1' contours this year so that's why I was considering getting a new chip. It's just to bad that most of the lakes I want or fish are off. I see you can turn these lakes in that are inaccurate to Navionics but the form to fill out seems like a pain. Guess I will get a Lakemaster and between the two I should have it mostly covered!
