Seems this is a brand that I can get locally, within 2 days. Le$$ than Cabelas. AGM's. Searching here brought up nothing. Has anyone heard of them or used them recently?? Thanks, Bruce.

Deka is the correct spellling. Local seller says they carry a one year free replacement, and a 3 year pro rated warranty. Is this standard stuff? Has anyone chosen gel over agm when comparing the two?

I've used Deka brand batteries both in marine applications as well as in my car in the past. I have not had a problem with this brand when I did use them. They did last me a good long time. The only problem I had when they eventually did go bad (years of use and age), I couldn't replace them locally. I did look to replace them with another Deka...but at the time...no one locally carried that brand nearby so I had to move on to another brand.

Bruce, if you can get Deka Marine Master deep cell batteries, by all means, BUY THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have run about everything in my rig, except for the Optimas, and the DEKAS lasted as long as any of the top brands, or longer. I just orderred my second set, which should be here tommorrow, this after 5 years of use with the first set. That, along with a great price, has me sticking with them. You'll love your new batteries!

Bruce, I just picked up a private label agm battery that's made by deka. $125 in washington, pa. Not sure where you're from or if the company will ship but i'd be glad to help if interested. This is a group size 27 and it's 2 year warranty 5 year pro rated.

Thanks for the replies. $175 was the quote over the phone...and i waited for the s & H to be added but that never was spoken..... I just asked for the price on a 27 series dual purpose. That would be for the starting battery and if they make a deep cycle I want that one too. Rather have it for the MinnKota anyways. They are heavier than the two i have now. I really like the idea of leaving them in the boat over the winter. With my bad back and all.....

I can't speak for marine use but Deka is a popular/reputable brand in Telecom stand-by power and UPS applications.

I just bought the batteries yesterday so that is a current price. And a correction... the batteries are made by east penn... deka is just a name. When I was looking around I called the east penn wharehouse and they gave me the contact where I bought the batteries.

Bruce, if you want the info where I got the batteries email me at [email protected] as I cannot pm you.

Oh yeah...I forgot about that.

One year we had a winter-like storm hit us early one Fall and the temps really tanked. Tons of wet heavy snow fell, then the temps dropped even further...freezing everything solid that night.

Well...I was caught off guard by this storm and my boat was not yet winterized. I thought we still had several weeks of fishing to do. So..the thought never crossed my mind to bother.

Well...from the weight of the wet, heavy snow and the cheap boat cover I had on my old, 14 ft aluminum fishing boat at the time......the cover ripped and gave way to all of that wet, heavy snow. Even with the plug removed from the boat...that wet, heavy snow just accumulated in the boat and froze solid. Within the next several days...we had a freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw/freeze patter going on that turned that wet, heavy snow from snow to water then into ice....yet....even with the plug removed from the boat...it was never water long enough nor water all the way down to where the plug hole is located...so...the water never drained. The back end of my boat filled full of ice that was about 14" thick/deep.

Guess what was buried and frozen solid within all of that ice? My Deka battery at the time.

That cold and ice didn't phase that battery. I chipped all of the ice away and removed the boat from the battery...took it in to the garage...put it on the charger...it had held it's charge without so much as a flinch. Worked fine for a couple more years beyond that.

It was a sealed, cranking battery. That may have made a difference though.

Only one more question from this battery greenhorn....I plan on an agm for the starting battery. Should I do the same for the MinnKota, or stick with a deep cycle? My onboard charger will charge either at the same time. The man on the phone said the dual purpose agm's have thicker plates in them like the deep cycle ones. Are current agm's strong enough to run a t.m. and charge up time and time again? Again, I like the idea of leaving them in the boat over the winter, and a deep cycle would have to come out. Thanks, that is all.

MACK-did you get to fish that fall with the ice boat? Did you remove the ice or did it melt with a warmup?

Any suggestions as to wether to use a deep cycle for the t.m. versus a dual purpose agm? I want to leave them in for the winter? Are agm's strong enough for a t.m. appllication? I am not one who goes out a runs the tm all day. Maybe 5-6 hrs at most. Thanks.
