Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> fine tuning the figure 8 question

Subject: fine tuning the figure 8 question

The other day I was playing with my new rod (Thanks Don Hunt! Go Lugnuts!) and I realized my hold for the figure 8 is based on power and control for moving the lure, not on being ready to fight a big fish.

so, for you few (right handed only!) fanatics who have a refined system for just about everything...

How do you manipulate your hands as you go into your figure 8? If you hook a big green boatside fish, how do you allow it to take line in a controlled manner? Do you thumb the line and hit the casting button to give the fish line, or, do you allow the drag to do its job? Do you reduce the drag? Again, how do you hold the rod during a figure 8 to be sure you are always in control?

(you know, I think this is the best question I've ever asked!)[;)]

First of all I hit the button before I start the figure 8 then I place my right hand in front of the reel ready for the hookset and fight. The left hand naturaly is palming the reel and thumbing the line. At times I may hold the reel with both hands and both thumbs on the spolls for a big fish hookset. [:sun:]

When the lure I'm reeling in gets close enough, roughly 1 1/2 - 2 feet of line or so left (sometimes more.. but you get the picture), I do a number of things at the same time:

1) stop reeling and click the button with my right hand
2) Left thumb secures the spool (left hand is below the reel)

Then, I move my right hand above the reel and guide the lure through the figrue 8 (or sometimes the figure 6 [;)]) with my right arm.

If/when a fish strikes, hold on! you are in for a wild ride. At this point, your left thumb is the only drag system opperating on your reel. I usually give out about a foot or two of line just before I set the hook. Keep in mind this is usually done in the same motion. I 'bleed' the line out with my thumb as I start the hook-set motion, then I clamp down the left thumb to ensure a solid hookset. At this point I still am in a free spool condition with your thumb doing the work, and I will allow the fish to run (and they usually do!) a little bit. When you have 6-10 feet of line out you should move your right hand down to the reel and begin landing the lunker!

I hope that all of this makes some sense, as I went throught the process here using an invisible rod; glad no one was watching as I was figure 8ing and setting the hook!

Now this is something even Sponge would love.....

Sitting in the chair in my office reading this thread....I'm gonna answer but first I "go through the motion" so I know how to best describe it......

As I'm doing this one of the other supervisors walks by my office and looks in at me doing a hypathetical figure 8...shakes his head, says "Hintz, there's no hope for you"...LOL

I'm never gonna live this one down...[]

Basically I do what "trophy muskie" described... I'm laughing to hard to write much more...
