| I see your baits and some of them are both spectacular and look very workable as baits. Obviously some of you are both artist and craftsmen/women. However, consider this, you are going to live a certain amount of time. Many of your baits may outlive you. Baits aren't particularly perishable over time and if you check into hobbyists that collect baits you will find that even less refined finishes and hardware have lasted one hundred years already. So?
You may want to create your own logo or signature, and also at the same time as a group, create a registration or call it what you may, a "brand book" so that in future times, people and collectors that have your baits, can look up and know something about where you were, what types of baits you liked to make, and maybe something that was your "style" or "method" that might be seen in your baits repeatedly. That is just a thought. When your baits are old, I'll be dead, and you might be too, but they may still be throwing them and admiring them way into the future.
Or just send one of everything to me and I will illustrate a book. |

Location: st clair shores, MI | I am an antique tackle collector as well as a lure maker. I think that is a cool idea and would be a great help to all the future lure collectors. Although it is fun and part of lure collecting to do the research to find out who was the maker of a lure in alot of cases the maker was just to small time to ever be noticed. I mainly collect creek chub stuff but throughout my searchs for them i have put together enough misc. unknown lures to start another collection just of those. Anyone got any of these 4.5 inch 700 pikies in a color i dont have

| It is amazing how many really well built baits are out there that were built in the last century by craftsman that obviously took it beyond the early stages and there are also what appear to be "factory" baits out there nobody knows anything about.

Location: Burton, Ohio | Interesting concept. I have been dabbling in the baits as a hobby but it is progressing to something more. The problem I have I get bored with making the same bait over and over. After three of the same I hit the wall. I like the challenge of making something new . Once I figure it out I am happy . I guess my dream job would be a bait designer / concept design. The rest seems like busy work. So many amazing baitmakers out there. Talents that never get seen. You go back and look at older baits and they were way ahead of their time with no story attached to them.

| I agree it would be nice in particular the thing about signing your baits. There's not much I hate more than picking up a lure over the winter and then finding out I love the action only to find that I have no idea what it is, who made it, and how I can get another one or 10! |

| I sign and date evry lure that I make or paint. Right on the top, and not very small. I always try to make it in a color that will stand out so you can see the top of the lure when it is coming in...very helpful with lures that have dark tops.
I only do this for the enjoyment, because as Tigger put it, it's lots of busy work. I'll make some lures every year, but I'm more apt to donate them for outings than sell them. I have about 50 blanks in the basement, but the guy who made them for me has cancer real bad, so I may never get any more. Can't get ahold of anyone in his family to find out what is going on either. So if I have to start making my own blanks, it's really going to make lure building a low priority, because I don't have any wood-working stuff or the money to go get everything that I need.
It's funny to see some of my first lures on e-Bay with a photo of the top with my signature and the year. Some day someone will be saying..."Who the hell is this guy? He sure made some crappy lures."

John John, you're tha man, that is almost an echo of what I think of lure making.The challenge of making something new, testing the prototypes, ironing out the tiny "imperfections" and when the baby is "perfect" or even before I'm already on the drawing board again. These are things that has kept the passion and lure making interesting. If I live near enough to ya, we could probably talk till the cows drop dead  1st6', nice idea there, we should all maybe keep a journal of what we make. Thoughts, concept, inspiration and the nitty gritty documentation. If not for perpetual then be interesting reading too as we ourselves flip thru the pages with arthritic fingers.

| I'm the same as Tigger, I would never make money selling lures, because I can't make anything more than once for the most part and even if I try it is always somewhat different. Not better necessarily just different. I do put initials on my baits, and I take pictures of the various parts of the process and save even early doodles and sketches. I mostly do this so that someone in my family knows the story behind the lure, but if some collector out there puts in a book that they have a genuine toad lure, then that would be just dandy. |
