Location: Stones throw away...finally!! | I have a Yamaha Vmax 225 and a while back posted on a thread about a over-heat alarm going off. Well, I am going to have the water pump rebuilt and was wondering if anyone has done this themselves. It isn't that it is a whole lot of money to have it done, but anything I can save on repairs is worth another day on the water. I have a good mechanical ability, but there is just something unnerving about tearing the lower unit off of my motor. Anyone with any experience with this? The guy at Yamaha said that I should be able to do it myself, just looking for a little first hand knowledge. Thanks. |

| I hope this isn't breaking any rules! But this is a great website for repair questions.

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | If you are mechanically inclined in any way you should be able to do it yourself. I did it on my mariner 75hp, 4 bolts and 1 lock nut and the lower unit is off. 4 bolts and the water pump housing is off. Pretty simple. The main thing is to not turn the input shaft on the lowerunit so that it lines up with the crank when you reinstall the lower unit, not a big deal if you do just easier to line it up again. Good Luck |

Location: milwaukee | Get the Clymer's shop manual for your model from your local public library or eBay and go for it.
The hardest part is getting the gearcase lined up with the shafts and linkages when you put it back on. A second set of hands helps, but can be done solo. Take your time and don't force anything. |
