How do the Powder Coated units work, compared to the regular ones?

I just sent some new (unused) rail-mounted powder coated holders back to Down East, in exchange for some non-coated units. I never installed rail mounts on my Tyee, and decided to use the flat plate Lund offers to go over the gunwale--the one guys are using to hold downriggers. This way I can use the traditional gunwale-mounted holders.

I was a bit concerned when I heard about the sticking, and so I asked them to send me back the non-coated holders...but maybe this is concern is unfounded?

Opinions?

I have both the regluar holders and also the powdercoated ones. The Powdercoat does offer more protection to your rods... so if you dont mind forking over extra money its a good way to go.

I smoothed all the rough edges of my "standard" ones and applied a spray rubberized coating that I purchased at the hardware store. It works good, but ends up costing almost as much as the Powdercoat by the time you are done and doesnt look quite as nice.. but still look good overall. I had to spray about 15 coats on them to get them to the thickness I wanted. The spray coating WILL chip some where as the Powdercoat has held up good so far.

All in all for Muskies the Down East holders are awesome!

Oh... yes we have had some trouble with "sticking"... but after a while that went away after they got "broke-in". Just be prepared and practice with it some.

I had a problem with sticking until I found out that I was not lifting the rod straight up to allow the release to work without binding. I was torking it a bit. I had some spray silicon on hand so I gave all my down-east holders a shot of that. Works really well and reduces sticking (when I fail to pull the rod straight out).

I called Steve back at Down East just now, and we talked about it again. He told me that after we talked before, he looked at their current stock of powder coated holders and none of them seem to stick. So I asked him to send me some PC units.

Thanks for all the tips here guys--I appreciate the help.
