Hi Everyone,

Looking to upgrade my drag washers here in the near future. found a website for the smoothie drag washers out of California, but which ones would be best?

What they have are their original Smoothie system, an extreme smoothie system, and a carbonex smoothie system.

This was the site I found them on... http://www.smoothdrag.com/

Also, they use a tiny bit of reel grease on the extreme smoothies...reason for this at all?

These will be going into Garcia 6500 series reels.

Anyone with experience of the different grades of washer systems? What has been your experience with them?

Thanks.

Steve

Go with the CARBONTEX WASHERS and the SS WASHERS, also use CAL'S DRAG grease on the washers, I have all my reels in CARBONTEX WASHERS, very very smooth and powerful over stock drags. Give DAWN a call and she will fix you up. Also she has upgrade reel bearings for any reel, give them a try and your ABU will feel like a new reel. Grease the drags so water can't get in and also makes them start up smoother.

Agreed, Carbontex all the way.

I will diverge in my opinion however, as I would suggest that you install them dry as that was the advice given to me by the folks at [url]www.mikesreelrepair.com and they know their business...they're also servicing reels for fishermen who are fishing for fish that put a lot more strain on a drag than muskies do.

That said, greased, not greased, these washers will serve you well.

I like grease on my CARBONTEX DRAGS because the drags will start up smoother and if the reel gets water in the reel, from fishing all day in the rain, the grease will displace the water and not tarnish the metal washers. I just put a very light coat of CAL'S DRAG grease on all my CARBONTEX drags washers. When I fish SALTWATER fish with my TRINIDAD REELS I like to grease the CARBONTEX DRAGS to cut down on drag heat, that will build up when a big Bull Shark rips offs 100 yds of line on hook up. Grease or not U will not go wrong with CARBONTEX DRAGS from SMOOTH DRAGS.

Are these Carbontex drags the same as washers that come in the Abu Records? I know they come with a carbon drag washer and even seen them the other day during the tear down and they are quit different than Abu's standard stuff. I really like the drag on the Record versus my other Abu's.

Yes all abu reels for 2008 now have CARBONTEX drags. FYI you can replace the fiber washer that is under the main gear with a carbontex washer, now your reel will have 4 CARBONTEX drag washers for a little more drag power. And if want the smoothest drag possible, you can polish the metal washers brite with 1500 grit paper and polish with metal polish so you can see yourself on them and coat your CARBONTEX washers with a lite coat of CAL'S DRAG GREASE.

Go to http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?p=957627 it will show U how to add the 4th carbontex drag washer to your abu reel.

I have carbontex washers on all my reels. There are some very good reels out there that have greased felt washers. Out of the box, the reels are great, but after a season of fishing, the drags get sticky/jerky...Carbontex all the way!
